Why is that bird biting it's own leg?

I read that if bird is biting so it is a sign of pain and discomfort. Maybe it was symbol expressing feelings of Irish people. I dont know. Another idea ?

Here is my Irish coin. One shilling 1963 km#14a

:D  Our castle is the best coin place on the world :D
