The other coins I picked up at the Coin Show today-  with what was left over from my Aussie spending binge:



Netherlands, 1847 Gulden.



Indo-Sassanian.  Don't know much about this coin, but it is apparently minted between 850-940 AD.  It is a Drachm, with a stylized bust on the obverse, and a fire altar with attendants on the reverse.  Mint is Gudhaiya.



The 1/4 Real from Lima, Peru is about the size of the tiny 1/2 pence coin from Great Britain's Decimal series.  Tiny!  I love that Llama.

Amr, I wouldn't say the coin is struck off centre so much.  This kind of coin was likely minted either by hand or by screw-press, so off centre would likely be the normal state of things.  The lump at the top is where a jewelery loop was removed to make the coin a coin again.  Damaged, but still lovely and one of my new favourites. :)

Now, all this is from the top of my head, I'll have to do a bit of research to find out about minting techniques in Lima in the 1840s.  ;)

Apparently, there's not much known about these coins. Zeno.ru has them filed here, under "unattributed Indo-Sassanan". This one is described as being struck by "Gurjara-Pratihara Feudatories in the Marwar region". Whatever that means. ???

More beautiful coins.

With so many fakes in circulation these days, I would be afraid to buy coins like those, without expert help.
