Old circulated coins
January 06, 2009, 05:38:59 AM
I see a lot of real nice shiney uncirculated coins on this forum but I wanted to know if any one else besides me ever fools with the plane old circulated coins. The ones that have been around the block a few times. Maybe they don't look so good but have a lot histoty. The ones you can hold in your hand and think just what has this coin seen in it's life.  :)

The majority of my collection consists of plain old circulated coins that have well & truly been around the block a few times.  Many of them appear to have been around the world a few times, not just the block.  ::)  :P

No matter, I still have fond feelings for all of them and as they only cost me face value,  I haven't paid an arm & a leg to collect them. ;D ;)

Hey, as long as I can read the date on them and see at least some of the design elements, I got no problem collecting circulated coins. Some type coins that I need for my collection are way outta reach for me price-wise, so I have no other choice. Still, I like 'em Unc or Proof when I can get them!  ;D

Like Nevol, my collection consists almost entirely of old circulated coins.

I like to have coins that I am not afraid to hold. It fact I don't even own
a pair of white cotton gloves.

Pocketcoins, when I start the massive project of organizing all of my coins (Hopefully within the next week) you'll probably see me showing off a few old circulated ones. Maybe a bunch of them actually.

I have over 6000 foreign coins from all over the world. Most are like the ones in your picture.  I have put them all in 2x2s (they store easier that way).  I have subsequently entered them all in an excel spreadsheet and created a pivot table which displays them in any order I choose.  I have a 10kg bag of foreign coins on layby and hope to pick them up in a couple of weeks.  The intention is to see what sort of date runs I can generate and how many countries and different coins I can find.

I have my fair share of proofs, mint sets, uncirculated and rolls, but as you say there is something to say about having an old coin in one's hand and a question mark as to where it had been before it got there.

Pocketcoins,

I just read your post, and then looked down at my desk and found the majority of coins laying there fit the description of old and circulated.

I was just looking at my 1902 nickel with a magnifying glass, trying to determine if it had a mint mark.

I really love the old circulared coins and wish we would see more photo of them on the forum myself. Sometimes I think folks are a little intimidated by the proof and uncirculated coins. Don't get me wrong I like them also but I like the look of the circulated coins best. So if you got them, post them, I will look at them.  ;D

Pictures of some of my coins and errors are also on the CCF gallery.  I'd be happy to discuss if necessary.

Interesting how I put 'CCF Gallery' in the above URL title and it translated to 'Mum & Date Site'.

How did that happen, given that we're 'personna non gratis' with them?

I was thinking you all must have photos some place.  ;D  It will take me awhile to look every ones pics over. If I wanted to put photo in the gallery what would I have to do? I tryed to long in to it and could not.

Speaking of the M & D site, I guess I'm just totally computer illiterate, but I remember posting there once, and made reference to the Coin Talk site.  When my post showed up, "Coin Talk" had changed to some other name.  So, I guess it's possible to be sure a competitor's name isn't posted?

 :) :) :) :)

But this was from our site.  It was our software.  Perhaps its embedded in their URL?

Yes. It's done using the swear-word filter most forums come with; you can tell the software to automatically change one word to another. CCF uses it quite a lot, to make sure blacklisted sites never get a mention.

Obviously, one of our admin/moderators has also programmed our swear-word filter to change any reference of CCF to "CCF". Whoever it was, it's obviously an American... or they'd have said "Mum and Dad Site". :P

(I've used sneaky cheating to get CCF to show up here in this post.)  :D

And to keep this thread on-topic: yes, most of my coins are circulated as well. As far as my OFEC collection is concerned, if you can read the country, it's good enough. If I had to spend $100 on OFEC coins, I'd rather buy 20 new countries than 1 or 2 near mint state coins.

Perhaps one reason why pics of awful coins don't get posted too often is, well... they're awful, and don't photograph well.
