The end my collection.
October 08, 2008, 04:54:18 AM
Hi friends.
I am unhappy but I am ending with my coin and banknote collection. I saw many very nice coins in this forum and knew many useful things about coins. Unfortunately I cann´t collect coins because I am very young and I cann´t to buy or swap nice coins. I didn´t obtain  any or only a few coins for month and then I am very sad. Some collectors promis me coins and I was often waiting for postman but I didn´t received any letter. Coin collecting is expensive hobby and it isn´t hobby for common young people. I will save my coins and maybe in future I will come back. I want to very thanks for Ellekitty, Lord Percy and specially S.George for beautifull coins. I will save their as memory of you.
I wish all members many very new nice coins and banknotes in your collections.
All the best. Your Erik.

Just because you cannot swap all the time doesn't mean you cannot collect coins.  Perhaps you need to sit back and read posts etc.  Sometimes we all need a break from active collecting.  But collecting never stops, you may think you will stop, but you will only start again later.  So best to take a break.

Erik, I'm sorry that you didn't receive the letter I sent.  :'(  Perhaps it will arrive eventually?  :)
I hope you'll feel encouraged to continue your interest in coins, because it's a lot of fun even on a limited budget.

Erik, I am sorry that you're sad you cannot collect coins faster than you are.

Please, don't stop collecting just because of that.  Probably every collector here has gone what you're going through at the moment; a desire to collect more coins, but not having the means to do so.  I did it myself when I was in college.  I just didn't have the money to collect coins at all!

You are young right now, but that doesn't mean you can't earn some money.  I don't know how your parents feel about your collection, nor their financial status and it isn't any of my business.  But perhaps you could talk to them, and earn some extra money by doing extra chores around the house. You could save it, and buy a coin every now and then.

I know you're frustrated, but don't give in.  Keep the coins you have now, they'll be all the more precious for you in the future.  Never stop coming to the forum here;  Numismatism isn't all about hoarding coins away.  It's about learning.  Learn about the coins you like now, and then when you can afford them, you will have done all your research!

Keep your chin up. :)

Always,
Kitty

Do add this coin to my collection?

I hope you will stay with us.

Re: The end my collection.

Erik, the reason I love this hobby so much is that it can be whatever you want it to be. I think it is fair to say that nearly all of us here at the castle, and on other forums, all started as young collectors. We all had limited resources and finances for our collecting. But that is a great thing, not something to be sad about. If you had all the money in the world, if you could buy any coin you wanted right from day one, where would the appreciation of the hobby be? The easier it is to obtain something, the less we treasure and respect it.

It may be hard for you at the moment, but do you look at any of the coins you have and say, that doesn't mean anything to me, if it was gone, who cares? As you said in your post, you have coins you have received from members here that you treasure, not just because it is a nice coin, but also because someone thought of you and went to the trouble of sending it to you. You are sad because sometimes your packages don't arrive. This has happened to all of us, and it feels just as bad for the person sending the coins, perhaps mors so, because the act of giving feels better than receiving. If I send someone something and it doesn't arrive, I feel terrible for days and days.

When I was young, all I could collect were coins from circulation, and only from my own country. There was no internet to be able to trade with people for foreign coins. I lived in the bush, with no city or town anywhere near to be able to buy coins from even if I did have money.

So I was happy just searching and looking through my parents change, looking for dates I didn't have, or trying to improve on the quality of what I had. It wasn't untill I got a part time job that I could actually start to buy coins.

As I have grown older, I have become quite successful in business and am now in the position where I can buy the coins I like. And it can be very expensive. But do you know what I have the most fun collecting, and what I like the most? Putting together collections from circulation. Cheap, dirty, worn coins that have seen so much in their little metal lives. It takes time, true, and at times it is frustrating when you can't find a coin you are looking for, but that is all part of the fun.

If you give away the hobby now, just because your collection isn't growing as fast as you would like, you will never be happy. It is the way with all things that are worthwhile, they take time to develop and grow into something wonderful. Not one of us here can collect as fast as we want to, it is not possible. If we were, we would still want more.

Don't think of what you don't have, think of what you do have. Don't think you can't get coins, think of ways to get them. Don't worry that the postman lost your package, he has done it to all of us. Don't think you are too young, you are not. Don't think it is an expensive hobby, it doesn't have to be.

And don't stop being a collector just because right now it isn't working out the way you want. I can think of things right now that you could be doing to improve and add to your collection. But, like I said above, good things only happen with a little effort, so if you want me to tell you, you have to promise to stick around here and keep collecting. It is up to you.

Good post latman. And you are certainly right that the sender of a package that doesn't arrives feels worse than the reciever. I currently have a trade with a member fomr another country going on. Both packages are way overdue. But I am much more worried about my package getting to him than his package getting ot me.
Erik, I can only add to my collection very slowly right now as well. I am currently working, but also going to college, so money is tight. I occasionally buy coins. But between my rare purchases I get pleasure from interacting with other collectors here.
And you can always trade inexpensive coins. In fact, if you would like to pull some coins from circulation in your country, I would be happy to trade some U.S. coins for them. That would only cost shipping. But if you can't affors to do that, I understand. And I still hope you'll stick around and remain a part of the KOTCT
Whatever you decide to do, Take care.

EriK:

I read your message...and can say your decision is not correct.

As pointed out by  learned and experienced Members like, Scottishmoney, Ellekitty, Latman, AdamL and others, ALL OF US HAVE EXPERIENCED similar difficulties, problems, etc.,    NO BODY IS AN EXCEPTION to this.   It is your talent, how to over come them.

For coin collection, money is most important.   But if you take honest efforts,   In due course,  you will have money to spend.

ALL MEMBERS are with you... support you and encourage you.   In fact all of us are not encouraging Erik.... but the Hobby.

When I met Mr.Francis H. Thomas, Vice-Consul of U.S.Consulate Office,  to request a Kennedy Half Dollar, in my small town, I was only wearing Half Trousers and WITHOUT FOOT WEAR.   To reply a Pen Friend, I could not buy an Aerogramme of 65 Paise., of those days.   Now it is  1500 paise   I had to wait one or two months to reply a friend.

Some family members even called me 'KASU PAITHIAM = MADMAN OF COINS

In collecting coins, you can improve your English.   You learn more on science,, art, history etc.,  According to Mr.David Q. Bowers, formar ANA Governor and author    'THE WONDERFUL PEOPLE WE COME ACCROSS THIS HOBBY, MAKES THIS HOBBY, WONDERFUL"

In my experience, IT IS 100% true.   So, please continue.   Also, please don't be surprised, if you receive coins from many many Members of this Wonderful Forum as CHRISTMAS GIFT, TO YOU.

God Bless you, youngman

Thank you all. I am very nice surprice for your support. I probably yet must learn many things about collecting . I still very like coins and banknotes. I am seing my coins thousands and thousand time. I am also very happy for each one new coin or note. I am sad mainly when I want to complete some collection. For example I would like complete 1/4 US dollars or Ausie penny but I cann´t to complete this collection alone and still sending me coins if gift - it is not good idea. I have some double coins but price of letter is expensive for me. I am seeing yours coin and banknote collection  - they are amazing - and then I envy all but I know that yours collection have many years.
For your nice words I sure will stay in this forum.

Kurt : I didn´t think you when I wrote about coins. I am sorry if you thought that it is about your letter.

I know that Eric lives in the Slovak Republic. How safe is mail delivery there? I just found out that a normal delivery (5oz) from the U S is $4.25. If it's insured (to $50 and under lock as I was told), the total cost is $10.35. Must the mail be insured to the Slovak Republic?

Erik, sending these packages only costs money, and the charge really isn't that much.  The fact that we can help out a Brother Collector with a small gift of time and money means far more to most of us.  We've all been there at some point.

Erik, I have ordered a 2008 KOTCT Copper medallion for you (from funds I won in one of our contests). Please go to the 2008 Medallion order thread to say whether you would like it in proof or satin finish. Both the medallion and the postage are paid for, so you just need to choose which type of finish you would prefer.

I regularly get mail from Finland to California in under a week. My trade sent to D20K in Poland took just 5 days.  :)
On the other end of reality--I've had packages of coins to the East Coast take 1-3 weeks, with a few never arriving.

Gotta love seamail!  I wish I knew all the ports to which my little coin has called.
I know the feeling. I wish my SeaMail package had sent me postcards from each port-of-call.  ;D

I'll have a package going out to Erik in 2 or 3 days. I'm just wondering what the general consensus is, just regular air-mail, or registered mail? I only ask because I want to make sure it arrives safely.
Thanks.

Adam, I just used standard mail....no insurance.....cost $4.25 for 5 oz, and it only took a week to get to Erik from the U S.

Glad you like them and you are welcome Erik. That was a little test to see if the package would make it ok. I have some more pennies for you. I will send them soon. Do you like US half dollars and Ike dollars?

It sounds as though a couple of packages have made it safely to Erik now, which makes me feel better about one that I have in transit.

Yes, I'm glad my mailing was a fluke.  :D I'm happy to send a few more coins--but keep my costs down; my budget is limited right now.

The Eisenhower Dollar (Also known as the Ike Dollar; a nickname for Eisenhower)  is a $1 coin issued by the United States government from 1971–1978 (not to be confused with the Eisenhower commemorative dollar of 1990, or the Presidential $1 Coin Program, which will feature Eisenhower in 2015). The Eisenhower Dollar followed the Peace Dollar and is named for General and President Dwight David Eisenhower, who appears on the obverse. Both the obverse and the reverse of the coin were designed by Frank Gasparro.

The Eisenhower dollar was the last dollar coin to contain a proportional amount of base metal to lower denominations; it has the same amount of cupronickel as two Kennedy half dollars, four Washington Quarters, or ten Roosevelt dimes. Because of this, it, like its predecessors, had a cumbersome and excessively large size, leading to their short time in circulation and replacement by the smaller, but even less popular, Susan B. Anthony dollar in 1979.

Do add this coin to my collection?

Dear Kitty:

Thanks for the nice article  on President Ike.    I salute this Great President of our times.

He said, "those countries, who does not believe in God, will destroy themselves"

I never expected to see a United Germany or the fall of U.S.S.R.,    His words have become true.

All  small information on U.S.Coins will educate persons living far away from you.
