good for you OldDan, by the way it is nice to see you posting again

Old Dan has chosen a Knightess to receive the Pet Set Excaliber (imagine that) when it leaves the proud state of Wyoming! It will travel to dsking in Colorado for a visit! Not a great distance but Old Dan says there are members in the area so that will be his choice!

Please keep in mind the set should leave the U.S. after 6 members have enjoyed its company or we run out of names on the sign up list! Which ever comes first!

Wow!  I'm almost exactly the same distance from "Old Dan" as I am from "CoinCrusader"!!!  What a perfect place to be...a "thorn between 2 roses" ::)

And...only less than 200 miles and the Pet Set would have traveled 2,000 Miles already!  Now that's impressive! ;D

A slight 'typo' there Deb.
I believe it should read
"a Rose between two Thorns".
I'm sure they will understand. ;)

After reading Deb's post I was assuming I was the thorn but, thanks to Muckeye, I now see it was a typo!

The Pet Set arrived today as the Pony Express made it over the Rockies in good shape.  Both horse and rider were tired, but pleased (at least the rider) they had succeeded in making delivery before the snow flies, signaling wintertime.

What a wonderful set!

Beautiful, plus the coins and medal were so appropriate to the set.  Congratulations to Terry for a great job.

Received in the mail was a package from dsking containing the set, a certificate to sign and pictures.

I will keep the set for about a week, for MountainLady and I to share (as well as kids and grandkids), and then pick someone at random to send the set to.

One thing I would really like to see would be for our pictures to be posted.  I still am unable to post pictures.  I will take pictures of the Pet Set as it makes some journeys around western Colorado.  Perhaps I can mail those pictures to a member who is good at posting, and have that member post them for me.  I think the Pet Set picture forum will be highly interesting if we can get the pictures from each recipient posted.

Again, the Pet Set is here.  Thanks Deb.  It's beautiful!!

 :) :) :) :)

Glad the Pet Set Excaliber is enjoying Colorado and bringing a smile or two to those who gaze upon its limited history of travel. Eventually I see us changing the set (down the road) to hold a coin from each member nation that will be decided by the members of each country involved.  Would make a very unique set until it got too large to mail?

Terry, I would love to say "yes," but ya have to remember I'm the "Sports" Editor.

I will sneak in a mention in my personal column however.

I'll keep the Pet Set a few more days and then pick a name at random and send it on its way.

Old Dan,

I came up with an estimate, noted on another thread, and my estimate was very nearly the same as yours!

By Hiway 50, and then I-70, it's 280 miles from Delta to Denver.

So, 8,299 total.

 ;D ;D ;D ;D

Thanks Old Dan!!

The Pet Set is on its way to Australia, and guess what?!  MountainLady signed the certificate as well as CoinCrusader42!!

We would have had MedicMichelle89 sign also, but she only had time for a slight glance at it, so she will wait her turn down the road.

Latest distance travelled is about 4.5 km as the crow flies from my place to Sap's, so I'd round it out to 3 miles. Just a hop, skip & a jump really.

Tried to deliver Pet Set, no one home. Took it shopping, so it's now clocked up a few extra km's. When it's done & dusted I'll post the total distance.

The whole idea is to keep the set moving with every member getting the opportunity to hold something that has traveled the world to friends we may never meet. From one Knight to another the set shall travel carrying with it a bond that is forged right here at KOTCT.

*** Pet Set Safe and Well ***

At a secret location a couple of miles s/w of Nanango a celebration is taking place.
I am sharing a  jug of mead with the Pet Set in my outdoor office whilst typing this epistle.
Thank you Buda, it arrived safe and sound.
Triggersmob has been advised that it will leave here after our Australia Day long weekend.
Will try very hard to have it photographed with some 'roos in the mist. No promises.
To hold such a trophy in ones'  hand is guerdon indeed.
A special 'thank you' to those whose extra efforts made this possible.

The set is safe and sound in Istanbul - Turkey.
So it is officially on a new continent; Europe, and I'll probably have it step on Asia as well.

The set is safe and sound in Istanbul - Turkey.
So it is officially on a new continent; Europe, and I'll probably have it step on Asia as well.

RenaL I just got thouroughly confused in my geography since I thought Turkey lay in North Africa ( stupid me)
And I know the Greek and the Turks are still each on half of is it Cyprus ? and Turkey really only are in NATO
but not in the European Union
I took my 50 year old bound atlas and it puts Turkey fair and square in Asia ( confusing me more)
I tried the web and found a 50 page dissertation getting me even more confused

Is Turkey a European country?
The answer to thIs is question depends on a variety of factors:
geography, culture, history, the choices made by Turkey itself and
the acceptance of other European countries.

Can you unconfuse me  >:(

Turkey is mostly on Asian soil;Anatolia; the peninsula alsa called Asia minor.

Geographically the easternmost boundary of Europe is the Bosphorus and the Dardanells strait. So Turkey has some land in Europe too (3 % of the total area).
Istanbul and Canakkale are the two cities that lay on both continents.

After the first world war, the fall of the Ottoman Empire led to the foundation of the Turkish Republic, which had big aims to  become more modern, and the new republic tried to improve the lifestyle of the citizens by becoming more like the western Europeans. Ever since, being a member of the "modern Europe" is one of the top priorities of the republic.
Therefore Turkey "wants" to be a European country, but has no common cultural, religious or historical background with the current EU countries, other than having ancestors that either ruled those lands or were at war with them.

Turkey has expressed desire to join the EU but limited progress has been made since the application. At the moment Turkey is an "official candidate". The general idea (of the ordinary people) here is that European Union has many points to be reluctant to grant full membership, but also doesn't want to completely say no and lose the massive market. it is also a general opinion that EU won't accept Turkey due to great cultural/religious differences.

The issue of Cyprus is also complicated, after 1960s the Greek population on the island wanted to unite with Greece, and as a result of some unfortunate events, some people of Turkish descent lost their lives and things just went on with a snow-ball effect. In 1974 Turkish government decided to intervene, and sent military troops to the island. Whether this was an invasion or intervention depends on which side of the fence you look through. Today the situation is this; Northern part of the island is controlled by Turkish people under the name Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, which no country recognises but Turkey. Cyprus is a member of the European Union despite the fact that they don't have control over the northern part.

Hope I could help August, please let me know if I anything isn't clear.

Thank you for the clarification

I worked five years with an ecology specialist woman who was married to a Turkish engineer living in Brussels
We got along fabulously
As I understand it there are two negative perceptions on the mainland
First is human rights ( but I believe I read american CIA tortured Dutch people in Holland with the agreement of the Dutch government and in several other european countries after the twin tower Bin Laden affair )

Everybody wants to keep Turkey in the NATO but the way they are exterminating the Kurds seems a little unfair from afar
allthough they keep naming them rebels ( But Spain got the ETA bask "civil" war and we only see the dead spanish after an incident)

The main problem was buried in article 27 on my webcrawler
EU is totally a Christian Nation whatever that may mean since I do not count agnosticists as Christian

As I understand it the Greek and the Turk do not love each other  but then again my father was prisoner of war in Germany and now I got some good young German friends . So a lot is possible with goodwill

Thanks for the clarification because I knew virtually nothing of what you said

I live in a divided country like ireland is devided
Person to person we are allright
Group to group we could drink each others blood I guess
I talk about those Frenchspeaking who exploited those Flemish speaking for 140 years and then started throwing bones to the dogs
I got a bone
I was in the first wave of children from labourors who got thru expensive Louvain University on a scholarship that was just enough not
to die of hunger and just enough to get by

In my year were the son of the director general of the Belgian TV and the son of the rector of the University and the son of the director general of the so called Farmers Union

The invites from the Belgian Congo lived in luxury in luxury dwellings with a pooltable and color TV and ballroom and they had like 3 times the pocket money then I had to pay all expenses for transport and food and books

Some things take generations to forget and even then the French do not like Napoleon lost in Waterloo in Belgium in 1815  :D
