I really like the style of Zanzibar coins from that period.
Look at how well the script works with the border pattern.

Sultan Sa' eed Bin Barghash Bin Sultan ALLAH bless

Bin=Son of
ALLAH=God

So the sentance is "Sultan Sa' eed son of Barghash son of Sultan God Bless"

The word ALLAH is written on the top between the two leaves, although it comes at the end of the sentance, because even the name of the Sultan cant be written above the name of God from the islamic point of view.

I would like to point out that the word Sultan at the begining of the sentance is a title while the second one is the name of the Sultan Sa' eed Grandfather.

Hope this helps :)

Amr :) :) :)

Because of this forum, I've begun to collect foreign coins.  Many times I come across a date of 1232 AH, or 1255 AH, etc.......that's it, nothing more. What yr is a coin with only an 'AH' number? Sometimes there is a double date, i.e., 1235 AH -1816. Well, over time I figured that if one adds 581 yrs to the AH number, you get the true date in our dating system. So, Saor Alba's Zanzibar's 1 pesa coin is dated 1880. I believe I'm correct on the dating of these various coins, but then........

Sorry, Goose, but the conversion isn't as simple as that. The Anno Hejira (AH) calendar, invented by and used by Muslims throughout the world, uses a "lunar year" that's only 354 days long. To convert AH to AD dates, you have to multiply by 354/365 (or 0.97) and the add 622.

Alternatively, you can use a calendar converter; this one I've found to be most handy, though right now that site seems to be down; google "Islamic calendar converter" for others that are probably just as good. AH 1299 is mostly equivalent to 1882 AD.

Note I said "mostly". Typically, Islamic New Year falls somewhere in the middle of an AD calendar year, so an AH-dated coin could have theoretically been struck in one of two AD years. AH 1299, for instance, began on 21st November 1881, and ended on 11th November 1882. Thus, "mostly 1882".

Hmmm, I wonder if I can just quote my birthday in Hejira, and shave a year off, since it was "mostly" a year later? :o

I like the design of the Uruguay coin: bold, simple, and attractive. It will have the same presence even after wear.
I missed that Zambian anteater coin--very nice!

I'll hazard a guess the Tongan pig represents prosperity in their culture.
I think Polynesians regard pigs as a big delicacy. At least Luau feasts in Hawaii always involve a large, slow-cooked pig.
Anyway...enough of the trivia lol.

That's a lively cat on the Somalia Somalo...beautiful condition too!  :)  I need to get outside my usually range and collect other countries.

The 1924 1/2 and 1 rouble do have rather outstanding designs for that period.
Poland  ;D 50 anniversary of the war effort of 1939. This coin actually little by little gains value as we speak.

In unrelated news, it strikes me that I have many more coins which I do NOT collect that those which I DO collect..

It is an interesting premise you all have started. I think it would be cool if everybody picked their best A-Z coins and put them all on one post each.
What do you think?

I should be good for that once we get to "A"  ;D Well, I do have a nice group from Iceland, lol.

Shame, because "X" alone would make a great country name--and an obvious flag motif.

Good idea, Fred.  Could be a bit slow to load though, for anyone on dial up. Is there still anyone using dial up?

How about making "X" anything you want? :)
Speaking of "X", in the monthly magazine Global Stamp News, there is a writer with a column he calls "Have You Ever Considered Collecting "X", in which the author writes on any foreign country he chooses, simply because there are no countries that begin with the letter "X". I always find his articles extremely informative and interesting because you never know what his topic for the month will be. I am more the numismatist than the philatelist, but by reading his articles I always get a deeper understaning of other foreign countries that I collect on world coins!  ;D
