International Year of Planet Earth
January 17, 2008, 09:11:18 AM
I went to the post office yesterday, to send a parcel to Nancy. There was a couple of coin sets there that kept calling me, so I had to bring them home.

They are the 2 coin set and the 6 coin set of uncirculated 2008, International Year of Planet Earth, coins.

Most coins are the same as the normal circulated coins, but there are two different ones. Here they are....

We don't have to worry about the U.S. striking anything like that as there is no place for a dead politician. The U.S. only strikes coins for specific organizations that are well placed in the world of government and as fund raisers for those chosen few.
A few years back Old Dan and I wanted a silver commemorative in tribute to the History of the Out House and even talked about an Out House Museum but they apparently thought our idea was full of crap? I would have thought everyone in government would have jumped on the honey wagon and see this project off the ground but it wasn't meant to be. Today it is still just a dream!

Now Triggersmob on a more serious side, will the dollar be readily available in unc? Trying to keep up with the Aussie dollars and mint marks is an interesting project when living in the midwest. Still need to get a list together of what I have and go from there, both backwards and forwards! Also KEEP me in mind for those proof Mob of Roos!!!

Hey I got some socks but currently wearing Artic Extreme Socks to keep my little toes toasty warm. Actually they sweat indoors but do what their supposed to while outside and believe me I am outside whether I want to or not!!! Sure wish they had these babies when I was much younger to go with my Canadian Sorels. The best boot ever made and of course MADE in CANADA where they really know what cold is all about! Darn, I may be off topic just a bit?

A bit off topic, but I think everyone will agree that warm toes is definitely an important topic!

And, back onto topic, I'm waiting my two sets to be delivered to me from Downies.  I ordered the 2008 mint unc. set and the companion set so I get both dollars and 20 cent pieces. Can't wait to see them!  I also ordered the bronze coloured COA dollar, and the NZ tuatara 10 cent piece. :D

Do add this coin to my collection?

Twoshadows,

The International Year of Planet Earth one dollar will not be released into circulation so the only coins available will be from the 2 coin uncirculated set and the 6 coin Proof set (for those that collect the proof dollars too). We may even see a similar situation to 2007 where the Mob of Roos one dollar may not be released into circulation either. The Uncirculated Mob of Roos will be in 6 coin Mint Set while the Proof Mob of Roos is available in the 2 coin Proof sets and the 6 coin Baby Proof Sets and a specimen quality uncirculated Mob of Roos is in the 6 coin Wedding Sets. The 6 coin Baby Uncirculated Sets have the 2008 Norman Lindsay Magic Pudding dollar.

It appears that the 2008 circulation one dollar coin will commemorate 100 Years of Scouting in Australia.

Other one dollar coins for 2008 are the Centenary of Rugby League and the Year of the Rat, both uncirculated in cards. There will be a second dollar coin released later in the year for the Centenary of Rugby League. They also have a pure silver proof version of the Year of the Rat dollar.

There are to be dollar coins for the Land Series - similar to the 2006-07 Ocean Series of Frosted Uncirculated dollar coins with colour pad printing.

And of course we have the Centenary of the Coat of Arms dollar with the C mintmark. This will be followed during the year with the S, B and M privy marked coins and the Coin Show counter stamped S, B and M coins. This series also includes a Pure Silver Proof version also with a C mintmark.

And that's what we know about and it is only January.

Happy collecting,
Wayne

A german forum on which I post had a kind of consensus they did not like the new gold one ounce lunars starting with the year of the rat because they do not like the new size of the new 1 oz gold coin
Those Germans are driving the old dragon prices over 1600 dollars now for an ounce with the horse and the snake in second and third position

Methinks Australia is doing what France does
France had like 64 new designs last year  ???

Where I am going I ain't certain

Several years ago when we still lived in Texas, we watched the Miss Texas Pageant on TV.  One of the finalists was named Stacey Outhouse, I kid you not.  She even said in her speech you would never forget her, because with a name like her's you are always remembered.  And guess what, she didn't win the pageant, but I still remember her and her name.  Gotta give it to her for keeping her family name, and making light of it.

The $10 gold scout  @$210 and issue only 1500 could be a goer as well.  With regards to the 50 cent release, I can get these to send at issue plus post (or trade).  However, I do not want disrupt any arrangements you may have with other members.

Scottishmoney I traveled in 1972, as a very young man, to a college in Missouri to see my younger brother who was attending said college. I really didn't go to see him but to meet a ture Native American cheerleader that was absolutely beautiful. I just wanted to see if this young lady was as attractive as her photos as she shook this young Hoosiers heart. Well she WAS and I loved every minute of that trip. A couple of years ago my brother and I were shooting the bull, so to speak, and the trip to Missouri was brought up and he was dumbfounded when I mentioned her name! He couldn't believe I spit it right out as he had forgotten it. NO young man with two eyes could have ever forgotten Gay Slaybaugh!!! ::)

Man I am absolutely outstanding at getting off topic! ;D

We can't let those French persons win. We need to have at least 100!  ;D

The planet Earth coins are quite nice actually. I have the mint set and two coin set.

Good Lord no! Not 100 different designs. ><  It's hard enough to keep up with the RAM, as it is.  And I pretty much ignore most of what the Perth mint produces;  Overpriced bullion. :(

Do add this coin to my collection?

Yeah well, I think the RAM will give the Perth mint some competition in the years to come with varieties. Especially now that they have Mintmark, counterstamp and privy mark $1 coins planned.

Remember that old saying "If I only had a dollar for every 'blah'" ? Well now we can, and a different design or mark every time Lol.

Re: International Year of Planet Earth

The MM, Privey marks and counterstamp coins won't actually mean extra coins as such - it will just be a way of differentiating (and correctly labelling) the dollar coins that we have referred to as 'Main Press' and 'Mobile Press' coins. Up till now, all the coins in this series have been referred to as 'Mint Mark' coins.

The Main Press C MM coin will be the only coin referred to as having a MintMark. These coins will have a raised 'C' without any circle or square surrounds.

Coins that have been produced on the main press for other cities (eg B for Brisbane, S for Sydney, M for Melbourne, A for Adelaide etc) will be more correctly referred to as having Privy Marks. These coins will be identifiable by having an incuse square around the lettering.

Coins that have been counterstamped on the mobile press at shows etc will have an incused circle around the lettering. These will be referred to as counterstamped

At least there will be no confusion in recognising the mobile press coins any more. I just hope RAM plans to continue this practice and that it isn't just a 1 year venture.

Been a GREAT Australia week here in Indiana. I have added the following to my collection; Bronze 2008 Original Coat of Arms $1, the 2008 Centenary of Scouts Australia, and the International Year of Planet Earth which contains the proof 20 cent piece and the 2008 MOB OF ROOS!!!! ;D I am very impressed with the low mintage of the Silver Coat of Arms at 12,500. It is my humble opinion that these low mintage world coins have no where to go except up in value. Thanks to my good friends in OZ I am off to a great start here in 2008!
