Which Countries Issue Them?
October 08, 2007, 07:10:40 AM
I have some Bi-Metallic coins from Canada and from Mexico.  I added them to my collection while traveling in those two countries.

Are there other well-known countries where Bi-Metallic coins are minted?

And, would Bi-Metallic coins be an exciting thing for our Government to produce?

Comments appreciated.

 :) :) :) :)

The USA issued some bi-metallics way back in 1792, see the silver centered cent in the Red Book.  Other than that there was the Bicentennial of Congress $10, and that is it.

All of the Euro-issuing countries, Russia, Thailand, Great Britain, Central African States, just to name a few of the top of my head.  I've got the most recent spreadsheet from the World Bi-Metallic Coin Collectors Club (http://wbcc-online.com/)if you really want it.  It's not small.  :D

Funny about the twoonie, I was in the bank on Saturday and asked the teller if she had anything interesting, all she said she had were Canadian dollar coins.  One look said they were twoonies, I should have bought them for a buck, but I was nice and told her they are actually $2 coins, not Loonies.

Just one of the fine qualities of a Knight or Knightess.....honesty!

Gary all of the $2 commemoratives from the Euro countries are bimetallic and so are the $1 coin. You probably have more bimetallics than you realize?

I collect bi-metallic coins and tokens from around the world and believe me there are thousands of them going back many years.

My latest but is a tri-metallic medal that is still to be received.

Russia and Thailand have a number of modern issues.

Thanks everybody.

I just forgot about the Euros.  I knew better, but it slipped my mind.  Part of it is that I haven't looked into my Euro collection for several months.

Thanks again for the replies.

I logged out and back in and the image is still there. Looks like Bobby must have allowed this site to post images from CCF gallery.

There are some very nice bi-metallic coins around including Euros and fantasy coins.

Princess Grace - Grace Kelly

There are a number of 'home made' coins and medals as well.

I was looking throuigh my desk drawer tonight and discovered I have a nice bi-metallic piece myself.

It was given to me when I attended the ANA Convention in Denver in 2006.

It's an advertisment for the just-concluded ANA Convention in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

The inside part is a Wisconsin Statehood Quarter which has a gold tinge to it. The outside is silver colored and promotes the 2007 ANA Convention.

It's a nice little conversation piece.

As I know, Italy issued for the first time bimetallic coins for circulation in early 1980's followed by San Marino (in fact is the same mint: Rome!).

The Vatican has issued them as well.  I have a number of bi-metallic coins from around the world.

Some are better than others but there are some very nice coins around.
