I should have added that to the post, and it is, or at least was, true currency.

I wish to furnish some information on this coin, please.

Independent Kingdon of Pudukottai, Tamil Nadu, South India

This Kingdom was founded by Raghunatha Raya Tondaiman in 1686 when he defeated the Pallavaraya Chiefs of the area.   The family came from Tondaimandalam, a small village near Tirupathy (Andhra State, South India) and belonged to Kallar (robber) Caste.
In the late 18th Century the Tondamans aided the British in their struggle against the French in the Karnataka.
With the Bridish ascendancy, the Pudukottai Rulers were conferred on their control of the region.   This was regulated in 1806 when, subject to a yearly tribute of one Elephant, the Rajas/Kings of Pudukottai (in Tamil Nadu State, South India) were guranteed their position.   
In 1948 the Kingom was merged into Trichirapally District.   Again it was seperated into Pudukottai District, now.

Actually George, this is a small enough coin to allow it to be "photographed" on my QX5. That's the one drawback with the QX5, is the small field of view, but for the price, it's a minor nuisance.

I also would like to take a moment to thank Mr. George for the delightful packet of Indian coins I received in the mail this week!  Not only did I receive a coin like the one Fred posted above, but there's a large Kutch coin, and many wonderful modern coins of India, many of which I have never seen before! 

There's one that I especially like, celebrating the Railways system, with an elephant on it.  Bholu, the guard.  Wonderful!  I might get pictures done up later for the really nifty ones.  Right now though, it's just far too hot to think!  December, and 80 degrees outside.   Yay for Texas weather.
