Post your so-called dollars!

I've always been interested in So-Called Dollars because of their connection to history, to specific events, organizations and movements.

I especially like the ones related to silver mining and here's one with that theme:

Never heard of these before.
Are they so-called dollars, because they don't have dollar written on them?
Were they actually used in circulation?

So-Called Dollars are generally medals about the size of a dollar. Some popular ones were issued for expositions in the late 19th and early 20th century such as the one the Alaksa Yukon Pacific Expo (AYPE) posted by Voyageur above.

You can find out more about these pieces here: http://so-calleddollars.com/

Great piece Voyageur! Love Morgan's work on that one.

Thanks Zoins,

I'm glad that the reverse design "Seal of the City of Seattle" is going to be used by Dann Carr to create the 2017 So-Called Dollar Fellowship Medal for Jeff Shevlin from an original die of 1909 engraved by George Morgan.

Also, thanks for the compliment Voyageur. It's my favorite So-Called Dollar / SCD at the moment.

I've been looking for a silver HK-353 myself but haven't picked one up yet.

I can't wait to see what the So-Called Fellowship Medal is going to look like this year.

Thanks Zoins,

I'm glad that the reverse design "Seal of the City of Seattle" is going to be used by Dann Carr to create the 2017 So-Called Dollar Fellowship Medal for Jeff Shevlin from an original die of 1909 engraved by George Morgan.

I have a number of those medals including some rare finishes, but after examining them, I noticed that the die Jeff used is actually a different die than was used on the original So-Called Dollars. So far, I'm not sure we've been able to locate a token made from the die Jeff used.

Here's more on this with photos:

Here's one from my collection that I like even though it isn't a high grade. It is the only one graded and has a neat pedigree.

Great HK-339 Usarok! It's great that it was part of the Alfred Ostheimer's So-Called Dollar collection and a plate coin for HK 1st and 2nd editions. Also interesting that it's unique graded. Have you run across any non-graded?

Also, do you know if there's a list of Ostheimer pieces or a catalog some where?

Here's a recent new addition, the 1870 Pilgrim Jubilee Memorial So-Called Dollar. Love the color on this one/

Here's an article from NGC that describes these in detail:
