2015 UK Coin Update
July 26, 2015, 04:43:24 AM
I knew about the Curchill 5 pound and Waterloo 5 pound coins.  These were available in late 2014.  So I purchased the Waterloo 5 pound and a two coin Churchil set - new 5 pound and older 1965 Churchill 5 pound in it, since these coins never circulate.  Also the Churchill 20 for 20 does not circulate.  So after ordering and getting these since historically the rest of the coins 1 pound to 1 pence Royal Shield coins, Battle of Britian 50 pence, Magna Carta 2 pound, Royal Navy 2 pound, and Technology 2 pound would show up in circulation.

Then Royal Mint has managed to throw us a curveball this year by changing the portrait in the middle the of year.

The IRB portrait is replaced by an portrait by Jody Clark.

Since we did know what would show up in circulation, I decided to buy coins in sets from the Royal Mint.

The first set released was the Annual Uncirculated Set - when this set was made, the Royal Mint had not announced the JC portrait.

That set has the 1 pence to 1 pound Royal Shield Coins, Technology 2 pound, Battle of Britian 50 pence, Royal Navy 2 pound, Magna Carta 2 pound, Waterloo 5 pound, and Churchill 2 pound coin.

When the new Portrait was announced, they offered a new set called Fifth Circulating Coinage Portrait Set - 1st Edition - this has a 1 pence to 1 pound Royal Shield coins but the switched the technology 2 pound with a new Britannia 2 pound coin.  This new Britannia 2 pound will be released in future, making the 2015 Technology 2 pound, the last of that design with the IRB portrait.

The Britannia 2 pound coin, was a nice suprise by the Royal Mint.

Next the Royal Mint stated that the Battle of Britian 50 pence, Royal Navy 2 pound, Magna Carta 2 pound will only have the IRB portrait.

After we thought the mint was done, that announced the Royal Arms 1 pound coin with the Jody Clark portrait.

Of course, we also had the Royal Birth, which meant another

20 different coins for circulation is a lot -- although I am used to it thanks to five still operating mints here in Germany with each having its own mint mark.

The ''British situation of 2015'' reminds me very much of Canada 2003 and 2006 when they had changes in the designs of their circulation coins.

We now have an accurate list of what will appear in circuation with 2015 dates:

http://blog.royalmint.com/19-coins-to-find-in-your-change-in-2015/

2015   Royal Shield 1 Pence   IRB
2015   Royal Shield 1 Pence JC
2015   Royal Shield 2 Pence IRB
2015   Royal Shield 2 Pence JC
2015   Royal Shield 5 Pence IRB
2015   Royal Shield 5 Pence JC
2015   Royal Shield 10 Pence IRB
2015   Royal Shield 10 Pence JC
2015   Royal Shield 20 Pence IRB
2015   Royal Shield 20 Pence JC
2015   Royal Shield 50 Pence IRB
2015   Royal Shield 50 Pence JC
2015   Battle of Britian 50 Pence JC
2015   Royal Shield Pound IRB
2015   Royal Arms Pound JC
2015   Standard 2 Pound IRB
2015   Magna Carter 2 Pound JC
2015   Royal Navy 2 Pound JC
2015   Britannia 2 Pound JC

What this means for circulation coins is that we will not have full Royal Shield set with the new obverse.  All of the circulation commemoratives will have the new observe.

Now if you purchase the coins from the Royal Mint, you will have the commemoratives with the old obverse and the Royal Sheild pound coin with the new and old obverse.

So my punt to buy the annual sets from the Royal Mint might have been a good choice.

Ken

I hope you have better luck finding those coins in circulation than I have had finding ours.
To date I have found none. :(

Thanks for the update. Very interesting.
Might the ''Royal Arms Pound'' replace the ''Royal Shield Pound'' in circualtion till the new Pound coin arrives? And thus they minted no RSP with JC effigy for circulation?

Right now, you can only make a compelte set of the Royal Shield with the IRB portrait for 2008. 2012, 2013, 2014, and 2015 from circulation.

In 2009. 2010, and 2011, they did not make any Royal Shield 50 pence coins for circulation.

In 2015, there will not be a new portrait Royal Shield pound coin.

I suspect that 2016 will see the Royal Arms pound coin.
