Metal Detecting for coins
August 09, 2014, 05:04:53 AM
"Anything" eh? How about metal detecting for 'coins'? I'm in the U S and have been detecting for a little over 20 yrs. In the past I've found many old U S coins....Indian Head cents, V & Buffalo nickels, 4 types of U S dimes, quarters, halves, and modern dollars....not any silver dollars. My oldest coin? A large 1.52 T oz Greek 246-221 BC Ptolemaic bronze coin in the U S. Some kid must have been bringing it to school for 'Show & Tell' and lost it.....and I found it. I've found foreign coins in the U S but also some IN the countries of Australia, Ireland, New Zealand, Canada, and Israel.

I've found many silver rings, only 2 gold rings, much live ammo of all calibers, tokens (3 very valuable), U S Civil War artifacts, many religious medals, 120 yr old dog tags, and other stuff too numerous to mention. By request, I've also found a few gold items that were lost by their owners. Metal detecting is a great hobby......try it, and find those coins. I average U S $23 common coins every yr.

That's quite a haul, Goose.
I wouldn't mind giving it a go one day.  :)

I have had a little go at it but only found bottle caps.

Found it a bit boring and gave my detector away.  Maybe I should give it another try and maybe at a better site as well.

I might have lucked out tonight.....found 2 more Indian Head cents and an 1888 V (Liberty Head) nickel under where a sidewalk was removed. I found no other coins but did find 3 old shotgun shell brass and a flattened oil lamp top. In my 2014 U S coin book it says the 1888 in F-12 condition is worth $60.....guess I was a little lucky.

I sometimes lived with my grandmother by the Solway Firth and you would occasionally see a metal detector guy or two combing the beach. I always wanted to get into it but could never afford a metal detector as a child.

Now I could potentially afford a decent metal detector but I live inland in a town and can't drive! C'est la vie!

So you live inland....so do I, but there are old coins in every town. I live in a modern town (1907) but 99% of the time I detect in a "Less modern" town (1856). No doubt your town predates our town by at least 200 yrs.

The town was founded by the Normans nearly a thousand years ago but the area had been settled pretty much continuously since the stone age!
