Most likely our rarest decimal coin. The 2000 $1 mule is rare as well, but you can usually find one for sale if you look, not so the wavy. And very, very hard to find in high grade.

Switzerland    20 Rappan    1982    Size of a nickel.

Second Swiss coin in just a few days.

Also, Convenience Store Clerk today said she had found two silver quarters and a silver dime in the past week.  Suppose its because the economy is getting really, really bad.

Found in circulation by a clerk, and then given to me.

Kind of a neat coin, about quarter size.

Poland, 1990, 20 Zlotych.

I got a 1994D quarter today with a reverse counter-punch. It looks like a slithering snake to me so I'm going to call it the Goldman quarter.  :D But whatever it is, it's definitely a counter punch--bent pretty good and an obverse bulge.

I finally got something at a good price at 7-Eleven.

I guess it's just a sign of the times.

I stopped in to my convenience store yesterday and visited with the clerks about coins.  I was told that a customer had just been there and spent $6 worth of silver coins.  They told him they were worth more than current coins, but it didn't matter to him.  The coins consisted of two JFK Half Dollars (1964. 1965), and all the rest were quarters -- mainly from the 1940's.

Our wonderful economy seems to be taking its toll on the working person.

I recently purchased a couple rolls of the Hawaii Quarter from one of our banks, but had not seen it in circulation.

That changed today when I got a couple of them in change.

I think they are really beautiful.  May rank in my "Top 5" for the Statehood Quarter series.

That leaves only one circulating coin I have not seen this year.  The 2008 Nickel.  They don't seem to exist in Colorado.  None at the banks or credit union.  Clerks I have talked with haven't seen them either.  Strange.

I've been finding a lot ot the 2008 Jefferson's, but like most of the 2007 Jefferson they are already in bad shape. Hard to find a keeper.

Martin Van Buren Dollar.

It wasn't exactly in circulation.  I saw it in a cash register at a convenience store, and asked if I could have it.  Then, re-spent it.

I wonder if we will EVER get rid of the paper Dollar?

I seem to be the only Castle member who is finding interesting coins in change.

Latest was yesterday, and it makes me think someone is dipping into their (or somebody else's) coin collection.

1943 P Steel Cent.  Shiny, and appears uncirculated.  This is the second one I have found in recent times.

Not so, Gary.

I was writing this as you were posting.

The till at work came good today.
I found this Charles Kingsford-Smith $1.
Mint mark "A". Which had only 33,060 minted.

From school lunch money receipts at my wife's school today:

1925 Lincoln Cent
1943-S Cent, yes a steelie
1943, yes, another steelie

And best of all:

1923 Buffalo, in G-4

More school lunch money finds this morning, asked the teacher that handles the fundage if I could inspect it:

1955 Netherlands 5 Cent - masquerading as a cent apparently
1990 Czechoslovakian 50 Haleru masquerading as a nickel apparently
1943-D cent - a steelie again!
1949 Nickel
1969-S nickel
and finally a 1970-S nickel.

Then she said that she has actually refused other buffalo nickels, silver coins etc. that she saw coming through because she thought they were worth more than they were spending them for.

Interesting coin found in pocket change today.

1988 D Lincoln Cent, BU.

Fingerprint unfortunately.

One rim is sharply defined while on the other edge, the rim can barely be seen.

I guss this would be considered an error.  Any ideas what caused it?

I just had a real thrill, but it didn't last long.

Cleaning out a dresser drawer, I found a Mercury dime.  No idea where it came from.

It was maybe AG, and had cut marks on it.  Also, an interesting date --1916!

Unfortunately, I couldn't find a mint mark.

Went to the fruit and veg shop today and noticed a couple of coins sitting on the till.
On closer inspection I could see they were foreign. I offered to buy them, if no one else was
wanting them, but the cashier checked with the boss and then gave them to me.
Obviously been passed off as a 20c and 5c pieces.

I even got a 1928 GV cent in a roll search late last year.  My earliest finds in cents were two 1909's last year, one fairly well worn, but the other was a fairly decent fine 1909 VDB reverse.

Canadian coins of most types are as common here in Michigan as US coins! If anyone wants modern Canadian stuff, I'm the one you want to ask. I've got plenty!  :)

I'll have to do some work on my Canadian collection & see what I need!  ;D

I'm nearly done working on my US coins, just a few loose ones to enter in my spreadsheet.
My main problem is I keep finding coins in safe places, where I've stashed them & promptly forgotten them.  ::)

I have a Whitman Canadian Cent folder.  Found it down deep in a storage container.  The excitement I felt years ago for Canadian coins started to come back with the discovery of the 1940 penny.

My thought at this time is that I will work on the folder in partnership with the two grandkids who are also members of KOTCT.

So, I would be most interested in trading with Nighthawk, or any member who has access to Canadian cents.  If trades aren't available, I would appreciate the opportunity to buy some.

I looked at the folder and found it contained only five coins, so we are starting from scratch.

I started to collect U S coins many snows ago. Then, living in Illinois at the time, an aunt gave me some unc Canadian coinage 2x (1c-25c) that she picked up at the Canadian mint (in the 1930s). I started collecting the Canadian along with my U S coins. Sure enough, some collecting buddies used to say, "Why do you want to collect THAT stuff?" And lo these many decades, I believe it is evident now.

Today, while working at the local hospital gift shop, I sorted through about $300 worth of nickels, dimes, and quarters.

I didn't find anything fabulous, but did find some interesting coins, including:

Three BU Westward Movement nickels
Date of birth coins of our kids (1967, 1971, 1973)
Four D.C. Quarters
One Puerto Rico Quarter
Four Bi-Centennial Quarters
Three Delaware Quarters, BU

Yesterday I found 9 coins on the ground, including a 10 kopek and a 25 kopek.  The rest were 1 kopek coins that make up most of my finds anyway.

1983 Canadian Penny.

I only find about two per year.

Since my grandkids and I are trying to collect them, we were happy to find this one.

I found an Uncirculated 1998 Howard Florey "c" mintmark $1 in the chocolate box.  It is a beautiful coin that stood out like the proverbial.  There are two benefits to this find (a) I have a nice shiney NCLT coin, and (b) I didn't buy a chocolate which keeps my sugar level down for just that little bit longer.   ;D

Interesting because I live in Colorado, and the coin is a Philadelphia mint.

Another day volunteering at the loacal hosapital gift shop.

Pretty disappointing.

None of the new quarters.  None of the new pennies.

I did find

1.  A war nickel
2.  BU Rhode Island Quarter
3.  Half dozen BU 2008 cents
4.  1981 AU Jefferson Nickel
5.  Smooth cent planchet

 :) :) :) :)

Gift shop again.

Of all the Statehood Quarters I went through, the most numerous was the first one -- Deleware.

Found one bright and shiny Guam Quarter.

Sort of found in circulation -- in the bottom of a desk drawer while searching for something else.

Yesterday was my day to work at our hospital gift shop.  During free time I looked through a bunch of quarters.

I found Washington D.C., Puerto Rico, Guam, and Samoa -- all BU.

Of interest, I found many 1999 quarters, especially Delaware, in BU.  Conclusion:  The economy is tough on people, and the saved quarters are being spent.

I am guilty also.  Took about 100 saved quarters and put them in my "vacation bottle" in preparation for a little trek later this month.

You're right C C! I've noticed an large influx of the early state quarters in AU at the least. I never collected them, but am now saving them to give to some of my grandkids.

Our 6,100 mile road trip was mainly on the eastern side of the Mississippi.  So, I stocked up on "P" mint coins.

Not only saw the Philly mint, but picked up lots of "P" mints to bring home.

Yes, I think so. They are plentiful in rolls (older dates I mean) as opposed to finding silver in rolls of coins. I once found half a roll of silver war nickels, and half a roll of Buffalo nickels, most of which still had readable dates!  ;D  What do you think of that???

I think somebody got into daddies coins collection. I have only found a few silver nickels over the years. Maybe half a roll all toll. And I can only remember finding one Buffalo in rolls. Definitely a grate find.
