Thousands of pennies, quarters, etc. ...
September 18, 2010, 03:24:50 AM
Dear knights and knightesses

I come to you seeking your knowledge and direction! CoinCrusader had quite the coin collection! My eldest brother inherited all of the obvious stuff - the coins in albums, proof sets, etc. What I come to today about is all the "other" stuff that my dad had -- I am talking mostly about containers of American coins -- thousands of pennies mostly, although there are miscellaneous numismatic items. Dad when through different seasons -- some where he looked at coins and separated what was "worth keeping" versus those to spend; other times he just threw any coin he had into containers and saved it all.  I am thinking maybe he has half the entire country's supply of statehood quarters! It is almost overwhelming.  The first thing I thought I would do is get each of my two kids a set of American coin folders with the goal of filling those with Papa's coins. I know to look for the best quality coin etc.  My question to you today is what do I need to keep regardless? All the wheat pennies? Those statehood quarters? Are there valuable nickels and dimes?

Also, there are tons of publications -- I think he always said to keep his Red Book collection? What about Numismatic magazines ...

I know sometimes one man's treasures are another's junk ... but sometimes they are treasures.

I wish I knew what he kept out of sentiment and what was potentially valuable. I know he would have loved the kids making personal albums from his coins -- what about the rest -- do we cash it in or save it as a coin?  Thank you so much for any all insight on this topic!

Michelle

THAT IS A GREAT TASK SEPARATING SO MANY COINS.........I AM SURE YOU KNOW THE IMPORTANCE OF KEEPING WHEAT PENNIES.......AND THE COINS CONDITION IS IMPORTANT......DIMES---QUARTERS---HALF DOLLARS BEFORE 1965 ARE MOSTLY SILVER....AS FOR NICKELS.....SOME  IN THE 1940'S ARE MADE OF SILVER.............BUFFALOE NICKELS CAN BE WORTH A LOT.......ANY COIN BEFORE 1940 IS PROBABLY WORTH LOOKING INTO FOR VALUE..........A COIN DEALER YOU CAN TRUST.........AND LOTS OF PATIENCE............GOODE LUCK.....OH MAYBE GET SOME CANNING JARS AND USE THEM TO HOLD COINS BY DATE...THEN SEPARATE AFTER YOU HAVE SORTED THROUGH MANY OF YOUR COINS..

I would be interested in the pennies with the wheat leaves on the back. My father always put those aside when he found them in his change. Not for any numismatic reason, just because they were different. I still have the quart jar he had filled. Let me know what you would need for to part with those and I would be glad to compensate you for them. Not only would I be continuing on with my fathers passion for them but, I would have something of Gary's that he had a passion for.

Let me know what you decide.

Also, did you receive the medallion I sent you?

Michelle, it is almost uncanny that you should post this today.
Only yesterday I was thinking about Gary and what happened to his hoard of wheat cents.
If I remember correctly, he had about 50,000 of them.
There are still a few Statehood quarters that I need. Maybe your kids could sort them out
for me and I could trade with them (or send money if you prefer). In fact you could use
these coins to make many trades and really grow yours and your kids collections, with
coins from all around the world.
Anyway, good luck sorting them and send me an e-mail if you want to trade.

Best wishes to you all,

Steve

Hi Michelle! Very good to see you posting with us again. As a rule of thumb most modern day circulating coinage is not worth keeping. I do wish it was but...! If you kids are looking to fill a set then of course you will have to check them for dates or mint marks. I would take the time to check for wheat pennies or any dimes prior to 1965. They were silver then and have value. The statehood quarters in proof (S mint marks) were made in clad and silver so they too have value. The normal quarters (clad) were made by the millions and quite common unless you live in Australia. There are a few older Jefferson nickels that hold a little value but they are few and far between. Your fathers Redbooks will tell you the story so taking the time to look through one will help a lot. Good luck with your task at hand and please tell the family we are, and always will, be thinking of Gary and his family.
