Help me organize
November 01, 2007, 06:22:58 AM
I sure could use some help in organizing my world coins. I have been collecting U.S. coins for about 30+ years and have always put my world coins aside. Now I would like to get serious about them but know very lettle about world coins. I know that the first thing I must do is organize what I have, just not really sure how to start. Any idea's?

I think the first step should be to organize them by country. Then maybe organize those by denomination.

Well, my largest separation is by continent.  After that, I separate into country alphabetically, then into denominations, and then those by year.  o.0

I've got a lot of coins. >.<

Do add this coin to my collection?

Gang,
I have put together an Excel Spreadsheet consisting of the listings from the 1800 and 1900 to present (2006) Krause catalogs. I have also separated out the German States, Italian States, Swiss Cantons, and the India Princely States on separate worksheets. It is in alphabetical order, and consists of 924 separate entries. It's pretty thorough, and took me about a week to write. It would be very useful to anyone who's going for one from every country. If any one would like a copy, PM me with their email address, and I'll send them a copy.

The spreadsheet will have, basically, my country collection listing, which you would just have to delete my entries, and use it for your own purposes. It goes without saying, that upon receipt, if anyone can help me fill in the blank spaces, I would greatly appreciate it.

I'm up to about 21 countrys now and have not even got a good start yet. This could take a long time.  Looks like I'm geting some good advice. I have takeing envelopes and every time I come across a new country I make a new one for it. Later on I will try to get more info on each coin. Thinks guys and gals

Pocket,
If you'd like to jumpstart your world coin collection, look in the bins. Alot of dealers throw their more common world coins in the "bargain" bin. My local dealer sells these types for 10 cents each, so you can get a lot of different coins for cheap.
Unfortunately, I'm well past that stage, but it helped me get to this point. I'm up to 322 different countries.

I concur.  I still paw through the bulk bins at my dealer's shop, even though I already have most of what turns up in there.  But it's always worth digging-  I get a lot of material for trading in there, occasionally find the odd silver coin, and sometimes manage to find a coin I didn't have!  Most recently I've gotten a coin from Uzbekistan, the Falkland Islands, Brunei, and a German silver 1/2 mark out of there.

Do add this coin to my collection?

The best thing I ever did as my collection began to grow was buy a second hand copy of Krause's World Coin catalogue.
Through Abe Books, an on line seller, I got a 2004 edition mailed to Oz for $AU 29.00.
The web address is www.abebooks com./.
Good luck.
