THE QUEEN
July 23, 2009, 09:14:22 AM

WHY IS IT THAT MOST COINS FROM COUNTRIES ASSOCIATED WITH ENGLAND HAVE THE QUEEN'S PROFILE ON THEM?
IS IT STILL A LAW OR IS IT JUST OUT OF RESPECT??

Well, a lot of the old colonies are still part of the Commonwealth.  They are no longer governed by the UK, but Elizabeth II is still the Queen of their countries.  I know Canada, Australia and New Zealand have QEII as their head of state, while the actual governing is done by parliaments and other such bodies of government.

I'm sure there are lots of better ways to say that, I'm so tired I'm ready to drop after work today, but hopefully I got the point across?

Do add this coin to my collection?

There are alot of countries that have the Queen on all of their coins. No disrespect to the Queen, but the same obverse (or is it reverse) on all of those coins bores the heck out of me. Thankfully there is alot of variety in what they put on the other side of the coin.

Adam, you're right on the issue that the Queen graces (?) those coins. Now a Queen's image that really turned me on to foreign coin collecting is the image of Queen Victoria on a 1 rupee coin of 1840. I think Kitty showed one arouund 1 1/2 yrs ago. Since then, I've purchased many foreign silver coins from around 55 countries. Yes, there are some coppers thrown into the mix because the images are cool....and low mintaged.

Britain, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, and a dozen or so other countries (mostly small islands in the Pacific and Caribbean) are known as Commonwealth realms. They're all independent self governing monarchies that just happen to share the same monarch. Each of these countries are free to set their own laws as to what designs appear on their own coinage.

Australian laws, for instance, say that the Treasury department (and ultimately, the Treasurer and other politicians) can decide to put whatever they like on the coins. We keep the Queen there out of respect for tradition. She's still our Queen, and a majority of the population want it to stay that way. Past suggestions to remove the links to Britain still seen on the coinage designs, flag, and other national symbols have proved unpopular, with monarchists accusing such moves as being "republicanism by stealth".

Papua New Guinea, on the other hand, is constitutionally very similar to Australia - the Queen is Queen there, too. However, PNG coins never show the Queen, unless the coin is actually commemorating something royal eg. a royal visit. The obverse of all PNG coins is the same: the country's national symbol, a bird-of-paradise sitting on a drum.

Britain also still owns several "colonies", the last remnants of the Empire of yesteryear. They're called overseas territories now, though they're still not independent. Most of these countries also make their own coins and their coins always have the Queen on them, since their laws are still largely based on British laws.

Fiji is anomalous in that it became a republic after a military coup in 1987, but they continue to use the Queen's portrait on their coins (though the portrait they use is the now-obsolete one that was current back when Fiji became a republic). I don't know why; you'll have to ask a Fijian.

An interesting side note, Queen Elizabeth will go down in history as the person who has had their portrait on more coins than anyone else before or even ever again.  Her portrait has appeared on coins from every continent that issued coins, and also more countries coins than a single person ever has or will have again.

Her portrait has appeared on more banknotes from more countries than any single other person has also.

The beginning of her reign during the sunset of the British Empire no doubt contributes to that, but also the sheer length of her reign which is now 57 years.

Vivat Regina - Long Live the Queen!

I remember the Queen coming to Chicago in 1953. They wanted to enter the mouth of the Chicago River (from Lk Michigan) with their yacht to moor right in Chicago. Well it seemed that the river wasn't deep enough to accomodate the yacht, so Chicago somehow (?) "found" $50K to dredge the Chicago river entrance. That cost today would be $400K.

I do like tradition, and enjoy seeing the Queen's portrait on coinage.

I've learned over the past few years, largely due to a trip with my wife to London, that, 1. The people, especially the older British, really like and respect the Queen.  Secondly, she is more than just a figuerhead.  Her input into policy is listened to, and does make an impact.

I agree, a good monarch is a good thing in the right place, Britain and Spain are countries that need a monarch who rises above the political fray and keeps order.  Only problem is, things change, and whilst I wish Elizabeth I of Great Britain a very long reign, hoping indeed she will live as long as her indomitable Queen Mother, I fear for Britain when Charles becomes Queen.

I think that's a joke, at HRH Charles'  expense.  And I too fear his reign as King of the UK and Commonwealth-

Those ears can't look good on a coin.

Elizabeth I of England has been dead for some 406 years, but Elizabeth I of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is very much still alive, VIVAT REGINA!  See, 'tis an Anglish trick, there never was an Elizabeth I of Great Britain before her current Majesty - only a Queen Elizabeth I of England.  England and Great Britain are not the same.  Just like for you Americans, Hollywood is not all of America.

Do take note:

Elizabeth, not the II.  She is Elizabeth I of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.  She is not just the Queen of England, but also of Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland etc.

We have an old king and in return for a few hundred million euro for him and his family he speaks
on television a few times a year
on july 21st our 4 th of july he talked about bankers without etics  ???

42% of the Belgians speak french and they like a president like france's better
I think we have bloodsuckers enough and need neither .
I know the britishers love their queen and their fish and chips and their empire where the sun never sets
and they send their prisoners to Australia to get rid of them ( they never entered into modern times :
I visited a lot of their factories and they are 20-40 years behind the times )

The one I like was only struck in proof, many of which are hairlined. Not that it matters. If I ever own Gothic Crown  it will be a repro.
