Treasure Hunting Without Getting Your Hands Dirty

Here's the way to go treasure hunting without ever getting your hands dirty........ Go to your local bank and obtain rolls of coins, and then start hunting! Found all this in just 3 rolls of half dollars!    Anyone find anything else interesting in bank rolls before? I've got some stories to tell. How 'bout you?

My local banks practically never have half dollars, and then when they do, they are all very well worn CN Kennedies that come in from the casino about 60 miles from here.

I get my better finds at 7-11, the owners around here save stuff for me.

I don't know. My hands get pretty dirty when I'm searching nickels. And the banks in my town never get halves anymore

This is true Adam. However I would strongly suggest that a serious hand washing be had before any attempt is made to pick your nose or lick your fingers. LOL  Oh the germs these dirty coins must carry around....

I have found some extremely attractive and valuable coins from coin rolls:

• 1966 Wavy 20 cent
• an absolutely stunning 1992 Barcelona dollar with a beautful die crack.  I've been meaning to retrieve and photgraph it. There is not a mark on it. Looks like it came straight out of a mint set.
• 2001 rotated 20 cent at nearly 180 degrees
• numerous interesting errors from various denominations
• hundreds of nclt

I can assure you. This is the way to go.  What you don't keep, you give straight back to the bank.

That's excellent Yass! You just can't lose! I once found a 1924-D Lincoln cent (a semi-key date coin, which I graded VF) in a roll from the bank, and if that was not enough, it had a slightly rotated reverse! And I paid 1 cent for that coin! Unbelievable!

I've worn white gloves while roll searching before. The fingertips of the gloves were absolutely black when I was done.

That gritty, liquid soap GoJo works pretty good on my fingertips after looking at rolls all evening. Now that I think of it, I guess you can get dirty just going thru coin rolls! Maybe I'll rename this thread "Treasure Hunting Without Getting Your Hands TOO Dirty?" LOL

I do box searches of cents and nickels, and I have never walked away from them with clean hands, but lots of nice dirty old coins though, the earliest a couple of 1909's last year.

That's cool! I once found an 1858 Flying Eagle cent in a bankroll! The coin graded Good, with some porosity. I still have it in my collection!

I was going thru a roll of nickels one time, and it contained some silver war nickels and some buffalo nickels. Some of the buffalos were dateless, but it was still a neat find!

I just searched $400 of 50 cent pieces. This is what I found and have kept

• 1969 - aUnc
• 1972 x 2 - Low Mintage 5.5m
• 1973 x 5 - Low mintage 4m
• 1980 - aUnc
• 1981 - aUnc
• 1983 - aUnc
• 1993 x 3 - Low Mintage 982k
• 1997 x 2 - Low Mintage 4.4m
• 1999 x 2 - Errors - Cuds under the nose
• 1997 - Jubillee - aUnc (minimal wear on the centre design)
• 1970 - Captain Cook (I keep all my Cookie boys. One day I will check them all for the varieties 
• 1988 x 5 - Bicentennial Tall Ship (I keep all these too. There was an Unc amongst them
• 2000 x 2 - Royal Visit
• 1981 x 4 - Charles and Diana
• 2005 x 4 - Remembrance (3 x robe cuds [common] and 1 x Unc
• 2001 Centenary of Federation - 3 x New South Wales
• 2001 Centenary of Federation - 1 x Norfolk Island
• 2001 Centenary of Federation - 2 x Nothern Territory
• 2001 Centenary of Federation - 3 x Tasmania
• 2001 Centenary of Federation - 1 x Australian Capital Territory
• 2001 Centenary of Federation - 1 x Queensland
• 1994 - Year of the Family x 2 (Wide Date) I threw 1 back because it had a nasty mark on the reverse.

All in all, there is nothing particularly valuable amongst them. Some are just not easy to come by.  I think that in all my searching I have only found perhaps 2 Centenary South Australia, yet they are no less common than the others.

Of the 20 x 2000 Mileniums in this lot (and 100s over time), not 1 incused.  I still haven't found one of those.

Now on to my 1000 $1 coins. Lets see what amongst those!
