How many of you would be willing to buy 2009 Sacagawea dollars with the new Native American reverse or the new Lincoln cents? I might be willing to buy a few from the U.S. Mint at their inflated prices but quite honestly I don't intend to keep them at those prices. To be worthwhile they would sell for .25 for each Lincoln cent and $2.00 for each Sackie. Shipping would be nominal so, with the cost of a bubble mailer, I would think $2 should get it.
To put this all in perspective the Mint wants $8.95 for two rolls of Lincolns plus shipping of $4.95 and $35.95 plus shipping for the Sacagawea's. There is NO need for all of us to go this route if we only need a few. Let me know if you are interested as Ebay is through the roof right now so nobody in their right mind will try to purchase either coin there. I might give this a try if any of you are interested.

I will wait until they are being pawned off for face value.  The Fed is not shipping any into my district accd to several banks, so why bother.  Crazily enough, I am in District 7, same as Lincolnland, oh well.

Offline AdamL

Good idea since I don't need to buy them by the roll. I just can't make up my mind though. The prices still seem outrageous to me.

I'd be interested in 2 of each from each mint, if more than 1 mint was involved.

Perhaps somewhere down the road this will lead to an offcial KOTCT store? We would not only be getting coins and ect... which many of us desire we would also be helping ourselves financially/ Something to keep in mind. Will keep you posted if and when I order these rolls.

Considering the mint had (or still has) a direct shipment program that allowed folks to buy rolls of the new Sacagaweas for their face value with free shipping, that would be the ideal situation for purchases of this type, so as not to be hit with the premium the mint charges for small amounts in specially wrapped rolls (especially when the paper rolls themselves would be removed!) And some folks are getting bricks of new Lincoln Log Cabin cents at face, too.
Given how large a group of collectors here, it wouldn't seem to be too hard to get the bargain priced stuff just as easily as the high premium stuff.

If you decide to do it, go ahead and count me in. I'm going to be going out of town tommorrow for over a week, and may not have computer access. So if something is decided while I'm away, please count me in for one of each coin from each mint as well.

I also collect rolls. Obviously mine are mostly Australian, but I do have a few foreign rolls as well.

I would like to regularly have 2 coins from each mint and a roll of each from mint.  I would like to do that for for each release. Obviously it would depend on the cost, but I am certainly interested.

I love the idea of a KOTCT coin shop. We could put a small percentage on the actual cost and postage. Given that we have members from around the world, we might be able to add something to the treasury from time to time.  However, we should be careful that it doesn't become tainted by misuse. There would need to be some guidelines in place.

I can supply the rolls (and anything else) from the Royal Australian Mint RAM Rolls, or when I come across them, at cost from the bank.  I know you can generally buy direct from the mint, but when they become available at cost all the better.

patience grasshopper, patience!
I too loved that show.  However, I recently bought series one, and boy is it dated. Stiil, I enjoyed it. It bought back memories.  ;D

Our shares would probably be cheaper and safer than Wall Street or any other rich man's "two sets of books" operation around the world.

Edix I know of NO opporunity to purchase from the U.S. Mint at cost or with free shipping. My dealer doesn't meet the $50,000 minimum to get dealer discounts and even then it is refunded at the end of the year. You must know something I don't as getting rolls at cost here would involve driving to a bank that receives armored car service or direct shipment from the Federal Reserve.

As for as the store is concerned we could do it but one must remember ALL items MUST sell above our purchase price. It would be great for many of us who do collect modern coinage but don't want the expense of buying rolls. That is why I brought it up. There eventually would have to be limits to what we purchased as I, nor any one else here, would want to stockpile coinage especially when they are not ours. Like it or not it would take reponsibilities and time to ccept the orders and payment and then package them up for shipping. Small orders wouldn't be too bad as they would be lite weight and economical to ship. Let me give it some more thought as perhaps we could do something along with the 2009 Woodies to see how things work out.

The US Mint website offers a "Direct Ship" program where anyone can purchase a minimum of 250 dollar coins at face value with free shipping. Currently they are out of stock of the new Native American Sackies, but that could change.
If you purchased the special rolled Native American Sackies from the mint at $40 per roll (of 25 coins total) plus shipping instead, you would be paying around $1.62 per coin, for each and every coin. So, it's a question of face value versus 62% markup.

And it's even more ridiculous with the cents, where some banks are providing them in bricks of $25 (equaling 50 rolls total) for face value, where the special rolled Log Cain cents from the mint are $9 for two rolls plus shipping. Even without shipping that's an 800% markup.

Sure it's convenient to pay highly inflated prices, but you are ultimately paying far more than you will ever see on a potential return on that investment. To me, that's just throwing money away. Personally I can't afford that.

Offline TwoShadows

Thanks for the information Edix. I had looked at the Direct Ship program but after seeing the amount of coins one must purchase I paid no more attention to the details. Never to old to learn something!!!

While I don't like to pay premiums for many of the modern coins that will NEVER be worth much, at least in my lifetime, I do like to keep up with coins and/or series of my choosing. When I am doing it strictly as a hobby I accept the markup to keep my collection current. Now, if I am buying as a potential investment or dreaming of future gains I pay much more attention to what I am doing. I kind of mix my purchase into 3 catagories. Long term with profit potential. Short term with potential to rise drastically such as the 2001 IndianBuffalo silver dollar and my permanent collection that I will more than likel die with. Keeps me actively involved as I can search for what I want and speculate when I feel the need.  Spending a buck or two for a modern coin is not going to make much difference in my life and I do enjoy some of the worlds offerings for their beauty, art, culture, educational value and composition. Guess I am a "If I like it, I will buy it" type guy!

I read a post on another numismatic list about a guy who couldn't find anyone to pay even face value for a complete collection of uncirculated state quarters, so he just wound up spending them.
No use spending too much for uncirculated examples of business strike coins that are minted in the hundreds of millions.
Every 3 months I go to the bank on the first day of issue for the new presidential dollars and snag about 7 rolls worth at face value. Most of them get distributed to members of my coin club or its youth programs. I keep a few, mail some to my aunt's grandkids, tip the baristas, etc. One roll gets mailed to a guy who lives near Philadelphia, who in turn mails me a Philadelphia mint roll for my Denver mint roll.
This week is my coin club meeting. I know one guy there purchased at least 250 Sackie Native American dollars from the mint at face with free shipping. There's another guy who will show up, who told me the other day at a local coin show that his bank had ordered him a brick of 50 rolls of Lincoln Log Cabin cents. I'll ask each of them if they have extra rolls to exchange with me for cash and see what happens.

BTW -- I have a single Lincoln Log Cabin cent, that a fellow coin club member picked up in change and gave me -- it's a Philly mint specimen. Another guy at the coin show yesterday also had a single Lincoln Log Cabin -- Philly as well!

The 2009 Sacagawea Native American dollars are once again available from the US Mint using their Direct Ship program. Minimum purchase is 10 rolls (total 250 coins) for face value and with free shipping. (Maximum order is 5,000 coins!) No telling which mint you may get, or what type of mix of mints. People who use credit cards with a "Cash Back" service like this program very much.

Twoshadows,

You know I will take care of your needs, and happy to do it.

I don't mean to sound like I'm pleading poverty, but times are financially tough.  I'm sure other members feel the financial crush also.

I never did have a truly large coin collection, and I have no coins of great value.

Still I love coin collecting, even if it means enjoying it through our forum, or reading books on numismatics.

I have given away many of my coins in recent years, often as birthday of Christmas presents.

I hope to be around long enough to see the economy rebound, and maybe I'll be able to replace the coins that once were mine, and now are gone.

Back to the topic -- I expect the dollars to arrive any day.  Will let everybody know.

Thank goodness for this forum.  It is truly like a family.

I just hope one day to meet some of the members.

Speaking of meeting members, Pat and I are hoping to save enough to drive to New England in the fall to see the colors and visit a part of the country we have never seen.  That trip could take us right through Indiana.  Would be nice to see you and TKO.

Time will tell.

If I go ahead and start the KOTCT Store ALL profits will remain with KOTCT. Everyone must understand there is a difference between coins WE get at face value, coins that may be donated to the store and coinage WE purchase from Mints or members that are currently in demand by members. I will assume it is worth a try but we also must understand mailing expenses will vary from country to country. I will try to keep those expenses at the bare minimum and, as we start, it will probably involve some guess work until I can get an accurate idea about weights, sizes and costs. Please bear with me.
I/We will accept donations to the store but will NOT sell on consignment. We already offer free advertising to every member so there is no need for me/you/I/us to be burdened with settling up on members sales.
I will list coins, tokens or woodies as they become available, the cost incurred to get them and the profit margin KOTCT is making. We can give this a whirl and see what happens and like it or not NONE of us has to use this service. It will be another service, I hope, that will benefit the membership. With that said, see the KOTCT Store offerings in the very near future.
