Bank Roll Finds 12/18/08
December 18, 2008, 11:44:09 AM
I'm a happy camper today! Even amongst all the snow and ice and slush out there, I found these silver babies looking thru $50 in rolled halves. First time I've ever found a Walker!!!  Just makes you want to run out to the bank and get more, even in the middle of a snowstorm!   ;D

I have never searched rolls of halves, the only silver I get are buying them from convenience stores, or banks when they have them in trays.  And I have never gotten a walker, but I did hear they had one but one of the tellers bought it the other day.

Sir Nighthawk:

I wish, I should be in Garden city to search Bank Rolls.

Luck is always on your side.

I get $30 (3 rolls) of halves about every month to look through. In my last 6 rolls.....nothing, but the previous roll acquisitions had at least 1 half (40% or 90%) in each roll on average. My best roll hunting was 2 yrs ago when I was going to New Mexico for my annual metal detecting of ghost towns. I pick up rolls of halves from small banks, thinking that older people are turning in their coinage for the paper stuff. I hit a bank (oh-oh, with Bushie's spy tactics, I should change the word 'hit') in Mountainair, New Mexico (Pop-1100) and picked up 3 rolls. Roll #1 and #2 = Zilch (0). Roll #3 had (11) 40% and (4) 90% halves (all J F K). Last yr I went through the same town, stopped at the same bank........"Sorry, we don't carry any halves anymore." With the 9 rolls I picked up on the trip last yr, I only found (3) 90% Kennedys (1964) in the 9 rolls.

Now I have a hunch that with the fiscal situation going on throughout the world, many people are going to begin to empty their coffee cans, piggy banks, and jars of their change to get a little extra loot (uh-oh, not a proper word - 'loot' - to go along with 'hitting a bank'.)

Great finds. You just never know when you may hit it big roll seaching.  ;D  It's kind of like a no risk treasure.  8)

I agree. What's the worst thing that can happen? You'd have to roll the coins back up again and take them back to the bank? It's a no-brainer! It's a "win-win" situation! HELLO!!!  LOL  ::)

When I go through the half rolls, I don't take them back to the bank.....I spend them. It really is amusing to me when I spend them..."Oh, are these the new dollar coins?" -- "What are these?" -- "Are these any good?" --"OHhhh !" -- "Oh good, I save these." and so on.  The last comment was from a lady around 60 yrs old.....the previous comments were from people under 25 yrs old.

I absolutely agree. People aren't used to seeing half dollars anymore, so spending them can be quite entertaining.

If you guys think spending half dollar coins is amusing, try spending some Ike's! Peoples eyeballs pop out when you hand them one of those big boys!!!  :)

Nighthawk, Ikes? I never thought of that. Just the other day I was cleaning my safe and I came across a batch (20-?) of Ikes in a baggie. Because of your idea, I'll spend some of them this coming week......I'd like to see eyes bulge! This last week I spent 10 really poor I H cents. One clerk saw one and said, "Oh, this is neat." She put it aside in the register. Also, during the summer, whenever I see kids on a corner selling Kool-Aid, I stop and pay them with dateless Buffalo nickels.....they just stare at the nickels. I keep a roll of them in the car. (Went through 3 rolls of halves last night.....nothing!)

A couple of weeks back, a bank teller had a large envelope with $80 in Ike's in it. Of course I could not view the contents of the envelope unless I bought it. Hoping there were some Morgan or Peace dollars inside, I got home and dumped it on my desk, and, alas, only Ike's! Still, the Ike's are hard to come by, so I now always ask not only for half dollars, but also ask if they have any large dollar coins. Who knows, maybe I'll hit the jackpot someday! Even if I don't, I'll still have fun looking!  :)

Spending $2 bills and JFK Half Dollars is fun, but can't match the reaction you get when plunking down an Ike for payment.
