Got A Counterfeit $100 At The Bank
September 22, 2008, 03:27:18 AM
This morning I went to the bank and made the weekly grocery withdrawl.  One of the $100's just didn't quite look right the ink was a bit off.  I looked at it up against the overhead light, and sure enough, it was Abraham Lincoln's watermark, not Ben Franklin's.

Someone had apparently bleached a $5 and printed the $100 over it.  The crazy thing was handing it back to the teller and telling her it was a counterfeit, she did not believe me and used the counterfeit detector pen on it.  Of course it appeared authentic according to the detector pen, because the paper was real.  I had her look at the watermark, and sure enough.  Fake.

If it had been up to a $20 I would have kept it as a curiousity, but a $100 is a bit much to swallow.

On Euro paper too yellow pen and UV light are getting to be worhtless
Watermarks
Hologram
Metal wire in the right place are the thing to look for

Where I am going I ain't certain
Where I am going I don't know
All I know is that I'am on my way

That counterfeit sure sounds labor-intensive since each bill is bleached and printed individually.
I'm guessing that the printing will be the tipoff since there's no possibly the bills would reprint well after an aggressive cleaning?
Good to know--I'm checking watermarks from now on.

Should I ever have the occasion to check a $100, I will do so diligently.  ;D

Do add this coin to my collection?

Many, many snows ago, I was in a bar having a few brewskis. A friend of mine said he had some fake $5 bills. Since I collected coins (12 yrs at the time), I said I would pay him $5 for it. We exchanged notes. I got home and sealed it in plastic (Plexiglass-?) and put it into my collection. About a week later, I wanted to go to 'The Lakes' with the guys to "look around" on the beach. LOW ON GAS.....I had no money for gas to go to 'The Lakes'......60 miles (96km) away. I then attacked my sealed plasticized counterfeit $5 bill, bought 15 gallons of gas ( .28c/gal) and was on my way. The beach sights were great!
