New York City Coin Stores!!
July 07, 2008, 08:50:25 PM
My wife Pat and I, along with daughter Michelle and her two kids (grandkids Tricia and Daniel) will soon be spending a week in New York City.  From there we will fly to Phoenix where Michelle will be graduating from the University of Phoenix with two Masters Degrees.  Her grade point average was 3.9.  She earned a "B" on her final class -- primarily because she had to hurry to meet the deadline.  Anyway, it's obvious where she gets her intelligence.

Back to the topic.

We will be in NYC for a week, seeing the sights.  Could anybody advise as to coin stores in the Manhattan area which would be worth a visit?

Thanks!!

 :D :D :D :D

Mecca is as close as the W 57th St. address of Stacks ;D  I walked into their location on a Friday morn, in jeans and a polo shirt and was treated very very well.  The gentleman who opened the door for me inquired if I would like coffee or tea etc. to make my visit more pleasant etc.  I looked at a lot of stuff, but bought only reference materiel on that day.  Since then, I have bought significant stuff in their auctions.

:o Wow...that would never happen here!  The owner typically utters a grunt and then expects me to want bullion--a veneer of civility at best, lol.  Someday, I have to get to NYC and check out the shops.  For now, I do enjoy buying at shows.

I walked into jean elsen in brussels in shorts and a teeshirt and baseball cap and sunglasses and after two bullet proof doors a girl asked me what my business was so I told her I wanted to buy and she interphoned one of the elsen crew

I was seated at a twelve persons table with twelve lights and placemats and after a while somebody came and I told him I wanted a 100 FF Angel

He went up to the vaults and returned with a single coin and gave me kind of disdainfully a stupid magnifying loupe ( now i got a 12 times led lighting loupe ) he quoted me a rather high price kind of grinning and I told him ok and toke a bundle of cash out of my pocket and pealed off what he asked.

I never ever went back to any coinstore whatsoever  :P

I got ebay  ;D
that is germany and france and belgium and austria and uk and italy and spain and holland etc

I just got a lovely coin from canada and another lovely from palu and a piefort from france and Emile Zola

If I was you, I would make it a point to look up Mila and Dumanyu whilst I was there. Dumanyu would be a great visit with all the goodies that he collects and then you could post some photos to make us all drool.

I appreciate everybody's input.

Some of the posts really make me feel fortunate I have such a good, friendly coin dealer.

I have only been into large coin stores twice -- once in Colorado Springs, and another time while visiting our daughter in Florida years ago.

At the Florida shop, you had to buzz to be let in, and then the management acted as though I was wasting their valuable time.

At Hallenbeck's in Colorado Springs, I was treated much beter.

However, at my coin shop (International Coin) in Grand Junction (Colorado), I don't have to ring a buzzer to get in, and I'm allowed to inspect coins and paper worth thousands, without someone looking over my shoulder.  As long as that shop exists, that's where I'll buy a great majority of my coins.

I will try and visit one or two of the huge stores in New York City, just to say I had the experience.
