Our "Stimulus Package" Check
May 11, 2008, 05:00:49 PM
My daughter and a friend both received a letter in the mail last Saturday regarding the $600 each "qualified" U.S. Citizen is supposed to receive.  Both letters, presumably not fake, stated that they would receive considerably less than $600.

Has any member received such a letter.  Or, the $600 check?

 :) :) :) :)

Isn't that typical of any government....promises something but forgets to mention that it is subject to certain conditions.

Sounds bogus to me unless they owe back taxes or something? I have heard of NO one else getting such a letter! You will have to keep us posted on what they do end up with?

Gary, I would be highly suspicious of any letters sent. There are -many- phishing scams related to this economic stimulus package.  The only notification you should recieve will be the check itself, and if your daughter didn't file an income tax for 2007 at all, I'd be doubly suspicious.  The only way she would qualify for less than 600 dollars is if she made personally above 75,000 dollars income.  Or, if she is a minor she should be receiving 300 dollars through your payment.

You may wish to contact the IRS about the letters directly at the website that OldDan listed above.

Do add this coin to my collection?

Got my checks on Friday one for me and one for my wife. They are supposed to be spent to help boost the economy but mine went to wards an IRA. Does anyone know if they need to be declared on next years tax return? Or are they tax free?

Well if it is like my states income tax refund, it will need to be declared as income on the next tax return.  Nothing like double taxation, WITHOUT representation.

Thanks for all the great comments.

I doubt that the letters were fake in that the "postage" part of the envelope had the IRS stamp.  I doubt that anyone would chance that many years in a Federal slammer.  Our daughter (Medicmichelle89) is a single Mom, but works at two hospitals plus the VA, so she may have made too much money to have gotten the full amount.

Oh well, just a political stunt which we end up paying for.

I want to know how a government that is in the throws of an enormous and unrecoverable budget deficit can send out money to all taxpayers?  Frankly what most people are going to do is pay on their credit cards, so the only entities that truly benefit are Citibank, and Amex.

Hey guys/gals my grandfather would be saying, "Never look a gift horse in the mouth" right about now. Another favorite saying on his was, "If someone offers you something for free, TAKE IT, one way or another you have probably already paid for it." Both quotes would apply here! Take it and run as you have ALREADY paid for this free gift. It is nothing more than some of your tax money that you have paid in all your life and, quite honestly, you/we are probably going to pay for this one as well but, if nothing else, you get to spend it instead of our money grubbing politicians.
To me the bottom line is really what can we do with $600 to $1,000 bucks that would help anybody? I am with longnine on this one. $60,000 would have stimulated the economy.
I would have much rather seen the money go into one way tickets for all the illegals (criminals) back to their home country. They are bankrupting the system in many states while the filthy rich make tons of money off of their cheap labor. They don't want to be U.S. citizens, nor do they wish to remain here, they just want the money to send back to Mexico and their families. It is no wonder the Mexican politicians DON'T want us to act on this problem. We are virtually saving their economy at the expense of ours. I have been furious ever since the demonstrations last year when the Mexican flag waving criminals in this country DEMANDED their rights? We can spend billions fighting a foreign war but can't spend the money to halt the foreign army flowing in from the south? All you have to do is read the paper and the police action blotter to see my point.

We could send all the Mexican labourers back in a second, if we could just make all the people on the dole get off of their voluminous posteriors and work for a change instead of sitting home, choffing on Pork Rinds, watching Jerry Springer, and procreating like rabbits.

Perhaps we can work on the freeloader side of things right after we take care of the first problem? ;D  The thing that amazes me about the welfare system, which was set up to help those out of work during the depression (correct me if I am wrong as that is where it originally got its start) is the mere fact a working man who hits hard times now CAN NOT get help let alone into the system. The system, in my lifetime has been ONLY for those who refuses to work! I knew a man who raised 13 kinds on welfare (more kids bigger the check) and most of those children went right into the welfare system as soon as they reached adulthood. Why work when you can milk the taxpayer cow for free?
There are a great number of things that need to be changed but it would take a revolution to get it done. The monster has grown to big and those with the biggest wallet and loudest mouth get all the goodies. (Squeaky wheel gets the grease).
I have watched demonstrations throughout the years, which the media glorifies for whatever the cause may be, and at NO TIME did they ever mention the demonstrators were being PAID to demostrate! The working man is to darn busy trying to feed his family and pay the bills to spend a Wednesday afternoon picketing and protesting stupid crap in front of the state office buildings. If only the hippies had known about this gold mine!!! They could have made a fortune!

Re: Our "Stimulus Package" Check

The crappy thing about welfare is that it is not a helping hand, rather it is a enabler for those that refuse to work.  Welfare should only exist for emergency situations.  But in reality it is much more difficult for someone working, but still not making ends meet, to get on welfare than someone that is not working at all.

My mother lost her job when I was about 5-6 years old and she quickly got another job, but making much less money.  She applied for welfare, but was basically told that she earned "too much" to be able to get assistance, and that she would be better off leaving her job and staying home full time.  Instead she stormed out, and got yet another job, working two jobs instead of one, for several months there my brother and I barely saw her, we were in my 90+ year old Grandmothers care.

So my point there is this, welfare doesn't really help people that need a hand, but rather those that want the whole handout.  And that my friends is the real problem here.  Not some poor Mexican labourers coming up and working 18 hour days to send their money back to Mexico to support their families, but the lazy posteriors here not working, and procreating like rabbits, because the Government dole lets them, and encourages them.

I do not care for anyone coming here, and expecting me to speak their language(even though I have spoken Spanish since I was very young) and waving their flag around.  But I believe they are not the real issue here, it is lazy American society that is.  And frankly, in these days of terrorism, and Iranian type guys, how the hell is it possible that they can get across the Rio Grande anyway, for Crikes sake, most likely they are here to work for 18 hour days, but who knows whether they are doing that or are here to fly airliners into Sears Tower this time?

I ran into a lot of people down under, who didn't work for their dole.  They came in to the Telstra shop all the time complaining about their phone bill, and always made loud noises about being on the dole.  One lady told me she was on the dole for 40 years!  I'd be ashamed to say that out loud!

I'm with the rest of you on this issue, though.  If you choose not to work, then you are not unemployed, and therefore don't require government assistance.  End of story.  Want government money?  Give us 40 hours a week, picking up trash downtown, feeding the homeless, sorting recyclables, something, ANYTHING.  If you take from society, but don't give back.  YOU are the loser.

I think most of us are on the same page. While are priorities may be a tad bit different we do see the problems which GOVERNMENTS and political correctness have created. I will say if any other company was doing what the gas and oil companies are doing right now they would be in shackles before Congress. But, seeing how all our elected officials probably own oil and gas stock and oil and gas futures they are making a killing as well. If you are making record billion dollar profits don't tell me about the cost of exploration, which they aren't doing, and don't tell me about supply and demand. Just tell me about profiteering, monopolies, greed and the ability to own government officials like pets in the back yard.

Triggersmob asks, "From an outsiders point of view. Would the problem be solved if Mexico became a U.S. state?"

Triggersmob,

That would be adding many more problems than we could deal with.

Even though Mexico is the "richest" of Latin Amerian countries, it is far and away the leading exporter of drugs to this country.  In addition the governments have been corrupt since that country began.  The low level of education.  The hurting infrastructure.  On and on.

Just the hoards of illegals swarming here will eventually ruin our economy.  Taking Mexico on as a state is something even this great nation couldn't successfully deal with.

For a bit there, until I read "Mexico", I swore you were referring to Louisiana.  When I worked for the Petroleum refiner in Houston, we had surveys every year on where we would transfer etc.  Hands down Louisiana was always voted as least desirable foreign assignment to be posted to.  Of course we should have chosen Angola, or Nigeria, but just about everybody wrote in Louisiana.  A state of graft, corruption etc. that all came to the forefront of the media in 2005 with Hurricane Katrina.  Some in Mexico agitate from time to time for reparations for the American Southwest being stolen from them in the 1847 war, I would offer them Louisiana in compensation.  It even smells like Mexico.

Lay a minefield across the border and they'll stop sneaking in.  Not only that but  the  Department of Home Boys' Job Security will be able keep a straight face when they say "Homeland Security."

We're not really a "capitalist" country anymore anyway so why not try Joe Stalins approach to solving the gas problem. Take two dozen  roaches out the board rooms  and shoot them. Then tell their replacements to tighten up.

I had a discussion with univ trained people the other day
Belgium still has coalmines which were closed in the seventies I think because only Italians or so were willing to work in them and the cost got heigher then the benefit and we ran out of willing bodies.
We have roughly half a million "jobseekers"
We agree that no nation be it european or north african would be willing to work in the coalmines because they probably can earn an equivalent amount of money reporting as jobless and seeking a job .
The only way to reduce the dole is for the working population to go broke and pay no taxes anymore . I think for the moment we have one fully salaried person for 4 non productive people ( non working woman and children and out of job etc considered as non productive )

Oh i forgot the fully retired  8) ;D :) :)

Scottishmoney Indiana is just now passing legislation to fine employers for hiring illegals and after the third strike they lose their business licenses here in the state. Wonder how many times that will actually happen? :'(  Must say I do like your thought process but it would be WAY TO SIMPLE for government to figure out. They will have to hire a firm to do the study and make recommendations, which should cost millions and take years.  By the time it is all figured out we will all be dead and gone so it will be our childrens problem!

I had a brilliant  suggestion for a better Executive Branch several years ago but they won't listen. Just put a computer in the white house.

1) "Scan my port, know new taxes."
2) "I did not have binary interactions with that computer---Ms. Laptop."
3) "It's Laura's fault. I meant Iran but she didn't check my spelling on the op-order."

I saw on the news last night that at least 350,000 American taxpayers have accidently received the wrong amount on their stimulas checks. Of course its in the governments favor. They are blaming it on a computer glitch (imagine that) and they are not sure how they (IRS) can make it right? And to think these folks are in charge of all incoming funds by way of taxation? :'(  I can remember a few years back when one of the major news stations went into the Boston IRS office to watch an audit take place. In a matter of one week, that office, had misplaced or lost over 2 million dollars. They didn't have a clue where the money went nor how they might go about recovering it. Seems to have disappeared over night! What's a measly $2 million anyway? ::)

I know nothing about the american (ebay) market but the .585 purity coin was made in large quantities and walks buy on ebay germany every week not going for melt because the germans want 0.900 or better goldcontent .
If this is also true in America you may consider high gold content bullion coins or the canadian comems which seem to go for melt .

Like that will ever happen :o  Several years ago when gold dipped under $300 an oz. the RCM issued their bullion coins in $300 denominations and guaranteed that they would pay that much for them.

10% below melt you should be ok , I only buy 0.900 or better because if I ever sell it may well be ebay germany and they want 900 or better

You guys in the gubment need to watch how  Big Ben does things.  Now what would happened if he took this long to spin out some "market sensitive incentives" to save   Bear Stearns!  By God, Capitalism would have run amok over their back sides.  And surely their executives "suffered enough" without that happening.

Nah, the "the chee-drins" can have that one too and probably a lot more to follow. Besides I already have a bank balance.  That's  already a chunk of nothing.

But now is cash in the bank more or less of a nothing than a stock spiraling in? And is more of a nothing greater than  less of a nothing or the other way around? This could be next big thing in financial algorithms.  Less nothing > More nothing, unless  N where N=nothing is off loaded to TP where TP=taxpayer in which case MN > LN where TIC gets (BB)X(TICBBSH)  if it  flies long enough  for TIC  to get to Argentina, where TIC=thief in charge,    BB=big bonus and TICBBSH=TIC's big bone for shareholders...before running for the "de plane."

The bookkeepers have found a new one

When a bank has sold OTC 's (that is over the counter crap were home lending and car lending and credit card lending are all wrapped together in a highyielding package and insured which an insurere against default)
Now these OTC's are liabilities and thes liabilities are going down by the minute so the bank is making billions of dollars which it books as revenue
How about that
The more everybody looses the less the liabilities the bigger the gains .

Big Ben and some of his cohorts were before the cons in con-gress the other day getting reamed for the liability that they imposed on the taxpayers with the Bear Stearns bail out.  But why is it still a liability?  The story I read was that Morgan Stanly was suppose to pay back the fed in 29 days. I pretty sure it's been more than 29 days since  Bear became a rug. So where's the money?

The whole farking house of cards will blow hither in the winds, all it will take is a shock.  Why does the USA not complain about Chinese human rights, or the BS in Myanmar, because the USA cannot all the whilst it holds "detainees" without trial in an unrecognised offshore colonial possession in the Caribbean.  China also holds the cards with the enormous coverage of American debt.  Damnable traitorous politicians sold America to the human rights violators - next they will want to "update" the constitution.

I am not a proponent of the death penalty, but surely some in our current administration, and some in the previous ones deserve it.  If they had the fear of the people, they would not sell us out.
