I got a cast copy (it's marked on the reverse) of a Connecticut copper on ebay. For all of $2. and one cent.  I figure the methods used to cast replicas probably aren't much different from those of forgers. The first link is the obverse and is pretty obvious. You can see a number of mold failures on and around the shield. You can see the casting sprue at 10:00. But the best part  is the die crack. Look at the second link. It's not likely that a die crack will just stop and jump over a space and start again?  Seems more likely that it was "lost detail" in the transfer process.

I suppose it is also possble that the mold crack may have a bit of schmutz in it, making it a filled die-mold crack... ;)
