Coin ID help, and a Thank You
February 27, 2008, 02:57:03 PM
First off, thank you for the 5 coins I received today. Just one problem... I went through both my 1800 and 1900 to present Krause catalogs, and I cannot identify any of them. I took pictures on the QX5, so some of the larger coins are slightly cropped. I'd love to know which part of (I assume) India, like the individual states, and a rough date if possible. Any Help would be appreciated...

Coin 2

Coin 3

Coin 4

Coin 5

Fred, we need to modify this message not to include the gift-giver's name.  We probably should come up with a nom de plume for him, so we can refer to him without his name.

Do add this coin to my collection?

The ones with the elephant (#3, 4 and 5) are from the Indian kingdom of Mysore, during the late 1700's.

All three of these coins are dated, but those aren't necessarily "normal" Islamic dates. Mysore sometimes used a unique calendar, the "Anno Mohammed" calendar.

#3 is the clearest, it's dated AM 1221 (= 1792 AD).

How big are they? that will help tell the denomination. A browse through Krause shows a bewildering selection of types and varieties, all dated around the same time.

Sap,
Thanks for the info on #3 which is 17mm. Coins 1 ans 2 are 20mm (or about the size of a U.S. Cent).
Coin#4 is 13mm, and coin #5 is 10x13mm. I did ganrner some information from someone who knows about these types...

"Sap is correct.  The coppers are of Mysore Native State. The Lead is Sathavahana Dynasty. Sri Yagna Satkarni  (Part of Maharashtra)Front: Elephant. Letters Sri Yana SathakanisaBack Symbol of Ujjain.3rd A.D"

I appreciate the help from all, but if I may ask a really stupid question which one is Lead. I can tell the 2 obvious coppers, 2 have a brownish hue, and 1 (coin#1) is nearly black. If I had to guess I'd say Coin#1 is lead...yes?

I believe #1 and #2 are of similar vintage, and would assume your informant is talking about both.

Thanks to the info provided, I was able to find a similar example on Zeno.ru. The "Ujjain symbol" is the circles-in-cross pattern apparent on both coins, and is presumably the "mintmark" for the city of the same name.

Here's another, a bit cruder. And this one shows the Ujjain symbol much clearer.
