1887 Morgan question
February 13, 2008, 03:27:14 PM
I just picked up a ANACS slabbed 1887 Morgan in MS 63. Really nice shape, but there is something on the slab label I don't understand. It says "CLEVENGER COLLECTION". Does anyone have any idea what this refers to?
It's the only slabbed Morgan I ever owned, so I don't know if this is a common label.

Thanks for giving it some thought,

Well, I don't know exactly. But sometimes they attribute coins to a certain famous collection. One that comes immediately to mind is the faouns Eliasburg (sp?) collection of U.S. coins. Clevenger sounds kind of familiar. Some people will pay a small premium to own a part of a world renowned collection. Thats my best guess.

Here's another unusual aspect to the coin. I threw it under the QX5 because I thought I saw some irregularities, and I found these marks. They're subtle, but they almost look like slight die cracks.
Opinions?

The notation on the slab is a provenance reference, but I've never heard of this one before. And those are definitely tiny die cracks. Good eye!!! ;D

Sir Fred:
The Mogan has die crack...quite visible.
I too remember the name of Clevenger as cine-fielder.   For your infomation, one American Mr.Ellis R. Duncan, has produced Tamil Films, in our state Capital.  He was the Father of Cine Industry, here
