Need a new car.
June 05, 2014, 11:47:29 AM
I had a little bump in my car the other day. I ran into the rear of another car at about 10 - 15kph.
The insurance company rang me yesterday and are going to write my car off. I can't believe you
can write a car off at such slow speed. The sub frame was bent and this is what would cost so much to repair.

Does not look so bad. I think it could be repaired.

It could be repaired, but it would cost more than the insurance cover, so they write it off and pay me the money instead.

As long as the front-wheel train tracks right you can technically just
pocket the money and drive it without repairs ( that would be the case in Belgium)
I do not know if in your country you have to present it to technical inspection
but over here the technical inspection would follow the analyses of an official
dealer garage

I have driven a car for three months with the boot nearly gone because it took
that long to get the new car I wanted but the rear wheel train was not out of line

Where I am going I ain't certain
Where I am going I don't know
All I know is that I'am on my way

I would really want to see your car up close, but to me it looks like the "sub frame" is probably the metal bar that acts as your bumper.  If you aren't fussed about it and the car drives well, you could very likely just get a new bumper cover for it and call it good.  Or just leave it alone!

The dent in the hood might be more troublesome to fix.

From the photo, it all looks cosmetic.  Is there any way you could lift the hood and show the damages to the inside?

And... if you gotta buy a new car, buy a Toyota!  That way I can tell you better how to fix it.  ;)

Do add this coin to my collection?

I wont be able to afford a new car as such, it will just be new to me. It will have to be a secondhand car. The payout from insurance is only $7350, so it will cost me another $3000 to buy the car I have my eye on. It will be the same make and model as I had before, but 5 years newer and an up spec model.

Kitty, the sub frame I mentioned, is the main chassis rail that runs along the length of the vehicle. The front of this is designed to crumple on impact (as you would know). This was kinked in the accident and would have to be replaced. I don't have the vehicle anymore, to show pics under the bonnet, but it was worse than I first thought. The radiator and aircon condenser were pushed into the motor. The right fender was also damaged and would have to be replaced, as well as the bonnet and bumper.

Joe, I wasn't distracted by such wonderful sights, I was pulling out into the median, but the car was in my blind spot when I took off, then I changed my view to check the traffic coming from the left. I didn't know the car was there until I hit it. We didn't report the accident, as the cops aren't usually interested unless someone is hurt. they have more important work to attend to.

Wow, there's a lot of options, I'd say u should go with a sports car. Lotis has some cool cars over your way. Quite a few rear ends on this thread. Some nice and some unfortunate. Looks like it's time for an upgrade. Carpe diem.... I'd go with something ridiculously fast

In all seriousness,  it's just good to hear that you didn't get hurt and the car took the damage. Things can be replaced,  you can not.

Thank you Jim. They do make a very fast Colt, it comes with turbo, but only available in manual. See pic below.
I have a dicky knee, so I prefer automatic (actually CVT in these cars).
Just got back from the car dealer, and paid a deposit on the aforementioned vehicle.
it looks very neat. :)
Late 2010 model, first licensed in 2011. Only 21000km on the clock.

I am glad you found a new car that you can afford.  It looks nice!  I can't help being prejudiced though, buying Toyotas keeps me employed.  :)

Kitty, I did check some Toyotas, but they were out of my price range. They are good reliable vehicles and as such, they hold their resell price.
P.S. as a spare parts person, they keep me in a job too. Mainly because there are so many of them on the roads over here. Especially the Hilux utilities and Landcruiser.

Toyota may be a Japanese car but they sure build an awful lot of them right here in Kentucky.  ;D  ;D  ;D

Those Toyotas made in Erlanger, Kentucky, Evansville, Indiana, and San Antonio, TX are made of more American parts than Ford, Chevy or GM these days.

I have been rearended twice and twice I saw it coming in the rearview mirror

First time was before a red light and the aging woman in the VW behind me was
talking with all her attention to a young man beside her
Car BMW 2002 total loss and I was in bed for 3 month with whiplash and fotofobia
Even the light of a calculator caused me headaches
Court process of course because the bodily damages were not paid and the insurance tried to steal
from me on the car and they had me in court for not going to work after three months which backfired and they had to pay harassment and six month full wages
( It was a workaccident and the workinsurance had to pay me full six months wages so they tried to screw me and the other insurance thought whiplash infected the brain and they tried to settle for half the price of the car )

Second time was a few years back
A sudden traffic jam before an highroad exit
I made it with 7 feet to spare to a complete standstill
The pregnant woman behind me at her face under the dashboard to read a paper map
to find out which exit she had to take. I helped her over the railing to safety and called
an ambulance . As reword they screwed me on the price of the car again and I went to court
for car and bodily damages . I swear to you that damage to the floating ribs hurts like hell for
more then 3 month. I received only half of what I asked for because I was stupid enough to go to
work with bandages and painkillers the next day
