'Exporting' coins ?
December 06, 2012, 04:13:10 PM
I've been mailing coins outside of the U S for over 8 yrs. At our local P O, the clerk there always takes the package or padded envelope. I happened to go by a different P O and tried to mail coins to Australia. The clerk asked what was in the padded envelope. I answered, "Numismatic supplies." She then asked, "What's that?" I mistakely said coins. She punched her computer for awhile and showed me the screen: "It is illegal for coins to be exported.", or something like that.  What the...... -I finally drove to another P O and was charged 1/2 of the postage (approx same size/weight) I was normally charged at my local P O. (For awhile, I had a hunch I was being overcharged at my local P O).

Yes, it's in the USPS regulations that you can't mail "coins" to Australia. It's mainly because of Australia Post regulations prohibiting cash to be sent through the post; the USPS are just trying to reciprocate.

Coin collectors have been trying to persuade both USPS and Australia Post to tighten up the definition to allow for "collectable coins". But no luck so far.

Most folks in America trying to mail coins to Oz have to use weasel-words like "numismatic items" or "collectibles" or even "stamped metal disks".

I HAVE BEEN HAVING A RUNNING BATTLE WITH THE USPS IN MICHIGAN---USUALLY WITH HOW I PACK WHAT I SEND---ONE LADY KNOWS ME KNOW AND I TRY TO GET HER TO CUT DOWN ON THE HASSLE---BUT MANY TIMES SHE HAS TAKEN MY ALREADY ADDRESSED  ITEM AND PUT IT IN A DIFFERENT TYPE OF HOLDER AND I HAD TO READDRESS IT ALL OVER AGAIN AND WITH MY ARTHRITIS IT IS HARD TO FILL OUT THE SMALL LINES------WHEN ASKED WHAT IS INSIDE I USE THE TERMS "HOBBY SUPPLIES" AND /OR PICTURES "PLEASE DON'T BEND"---AND THAT SEEMS TO WORK MOST OF THE TIME--BUT YOU HAVE TO BE THINKING WHEN THEY ASK YOU THE QUESTIONS BECAUSE STAMMERING WHILE EXPLAINING TO A GOVERNMENT EMPOYEE IS NOT GOOD-------"NUMISMATIC MATERIALS".......THAT SOUNDSLIKE DRILLING ITEMS..........AND THE GAME GOES ON...........

In this postal world truth and honesty will get you nowhere  ???
Over here sending something they only look at the weighing scale
1 gram overweight and it is no cigar as tko knows

Where I am going I ain't certain
Where I am going I don't know
All I know is that I'am on my way
