Coin Shop Visit Today
October 03, 2009, 10:37:49 AM
Well I finally took some time to make the drive to my coin dealer today. Seemed like months since I was last there. I wanted to get a feel for todays precious metal market and where it might be going, at least locally, and my dealer is always very honest with me.
I learned very quickly there was NO gold for sale and no one is selling but EVERYONE is seeking! Silver bullion was also almost non-existent as my dealer only had 5 Eagles in the house. NOW he has none! I grabbed those Eagles dated 91, 93, 94 and two 2009. Looks like eagles, at a fair price, could be pretty scarce until the 2010 bullion coins are released and then we have to worry about January prices.
Key dates were also absent along with high grade classic coins. I never let an uncirculated buffalo nickel slip by me so I did not have that worry today. Seems like the collectors with high grade coins are not selling anything either. I did notice a huge lot of circulated silver dimes, quarters, halves and dollars had just come through the door today. Will take someone quite an amount of time to go through all those silver coins looking for harder to find dates.
All I could do was advise my dealer my son and I were looking for a few gold coins ($2.50 and $5.00) to add to our collection. He said he would keep us in mind as hundreds of other collectors were waiting also! Looks like===If you got it you had best keep it for now!!!

I live in a much more economically depressed area than you, with unemployment hovering just under 20% so when I visit my local B&M there is all kinds of stuff for sale, which is indicative of people having to sell.  Yesterday I picked up a coin I have coveted for awhile, a 1981 Mexican gold onza - these usually trade well above spot when you can find them - luckily there is no demand here and my dealer knows that and I have bargaining power in the form of cold green cash.

I also saw - 7, yes 7 $1000 bills, one of the 1928 Series, and the rest from 1934, and two $500's.  They were all low to mid grades and I passed on them though.

But there are also several plats in the ounce category coming out of the woodwork.

I have seen a $500 bill. A friend of mine has one. But I have never seen a $1000 bill, much less 7 at once. Would have loved to give them the once over. Like you though I reckon I would have had to leave them there.

No shortage of gold around here! Most times if I want it, I can pick up foreign gold coins (and sometimes U.S.) for slightly under melt at a club auction. That's where I can find the best stuff for the best price. (When I have the money, that is!). I never buy gold or silver direct from a dealer. Any dealer. Too expensive!  :)  Terry, I can pick up most any date silver Eagles at a club auction usually always under melt at almost every meeting!  :)

It doesn't worry me, I can't afford gold, $1000 bills, or $500 bills. LOL

Well glad some of you can get to a coin shop.

I have a dose of influenza (not of the swine variety) at the moment and it has had me laid up for the last 3 days.

Even missed my QNS coin club meeting on Friday night.

Maybe in a few days my wife may let me out again.   ;D

Nighthawk I NEED a 97 and 99 silver eagle very badly. Have a good friend requesting them for his grandchildren's birth years. I have been pursuing them for almost a year through the dealers here (just 2) and have had absolutely no luck. The fellow wanting them is a life long friend so I would very much like to help him out. Let me know if they are available up your way. Will send you a check or use PayPal if you prefer. Just make sure they are uncs.

On the topic of currency I find it ironic that I too got to hold a high grade $500 note just yesterday. Another collector brought it in to the shop after recently buying it. While I would love to have a $1,000 and $500 note I tend to shy away from them as I still just see PAPER! In the end precious metals and collectable coins always get my money!!!

Terry, I will be on the lookout for a "97 & '99 SE. Will let you know when I find some. I love paper money, especially foreign paper money, but you're right- it's just PAPER! No intrinsic value whatever. That's why I try to collect something with precious metal content. Heck, I even save copper or bronze coins! Maybe copper will go thru the roof some day! LOL!  :)

Don't get me wrong concerning paper. I used to have a bunch of old U.S. notes but my favorites got stolen from a display at my coin dealer when he was burglarized one night. Guess I never recovered! I do have a nice selection of foreign notes and always looking for more. But, during these poor economic times I tend to favor something with a little weight for my money!

A coin shop sells ONLY coins, currency and coin supplies. A coin shop is the ONLY place where you can go in with large sums of money and spend every last dime to your name and still leave with money!  ;D

Gold, silver and collectable coins do not cost us anything. We are only exchanging current legal notes for coins and currency you can't get any more. The money has NOT been spent. It has been transferred into a holding of sorts or, if you prefer, another form of savings that is harder to waste away. (like your bank accounts)  It is up to the individual buying the items to hold them until such a time he would like to have his money back. The ideal situation is to get more than you paid for them. This is where a little wisdom in buying and selling does come in handy! ;D

Ah at last it was Saturday morning! I had the full day planned and it all involved being outside in the cool fall air getting ready for whitetail deer season! The old outdoorsman decided not to throw in the towel and bought a new tree stand. I had hunting permissions to get signed and areas to scout. And then, the love of my life tells me she needs to go to the coin shop to pick up a 2009 Mint Set for an Xmas gift! Darn my luck!
So off we go to that dreaded shop in Columbus with me being a patient loving husband smiling wickedly inside! Of course I lead her to believe "anything for you dear" and held that composure very well!
Once inside I noticed our dealer had purchased some SILVER EAGLES and they were calling my name immediately after entering his shop! They were screaming "take me home" and "adopt me" knowing both my wife and I were members of the Indiana Adopt Some Silver Society. Well I just couldn't turn my back on those little ones so five of them now reside with me. Being a loving parent can be tough but it is something I am destined to do!!! ;D
I just hope my wife can find someone else to buy a mint set for in the near future! ;D

When we visited you, I meant to ask where the coin shop was located.

Now that my coin shop has closed down. there is only one listed in my area, and I have yet to try and find it.  Isn't that something: One coin shop in an area of 150,000 people!

I usually go to Columbus which is my favorite dealer. He and his wife have been very good to my family. They have given my little guy both gold and silver for birthdays and, at times just because he does go with us to the shop.
My other option is Franklin, IN but it is not the same feeling as doing business with the Hardy's.

You mention "feeling," and that is so true.

I have been into a bunch of coin shops, but only felt "wanted" or "appreciated" in one.  Unfortunately, it no longer exists.

If you don't mind my asking, what year of ASE's did you buy, and how much did they cost.

I would like to buy some for Christmas gifts, and would appreciate knowing the cost.

Thanks.

Guess I am a little slow getting back into this thread? I have bought 97's, 99's, 2000's. and 2002's in the last few weeks. For the most part every one of them was $18.25 to $19.00 and that was probably at least a $1.00 under the national average. If silver jumps much between now and Jan. I will dread the opening cost of the 2010 Eagles!!!

Coin shop visit today was DREADFUL! NO silver or gold bullion for sale. Two fellows wiped out the silver on Wednesday. There was two pieces of gold and now there is only one as my son opted to bring home a quarter ounce U.S. commemorative. Pretty slim pickings today. Almost as bad as my deer hunting this year! ;D

My wife just called from Columbus as she had some Xmas items to pick up. She gracefully mentioned our dealer bought 3 gold pieces while she was there drooling over the Morgan Dollars I had told her about. Some of them were proof like so she had to check them out! I might mention she called AFTER he closed? They were gold $10 Indians (2) and a $10 Liberty. Didn't give me the dates but said the Indians were uncirculated and the Liberty was AU. Probably a good thing I was NOT with her this trip!!! And, again I see the luck of my life! Always a day late and a dollar short!!! ;D

I can bet on one thing and that would be the mere fact my dealer has sold some Morgan Dollars today! I will know once my wife gets home. Anybody venture to guess how many she bought for me? I will know in an hour or two! :'(

Well guys my dealer gave my little boy a $17.00 Olympic commemorative from 1984 and mommy bought 6 proof like Morgans. The only thing I got was a good lashing for going deer hunting instead of the trip to Columbus which might have been my idea in the first place? In my defense I did receive a call about a half hour before WE were going to leave which concerned a huge trophy whitetail buck that had just been rousted from its bedding area! Whats a man to do? Blame it on those darn cell phones and modern technology as a few years ago I would have not known about the big buck!!! (Going to take quite some time to live this boo-boo down, just ask my wife!)

My wife wanted to do some Xmas shopping today and my mind was still on whitetail deer. But after my last MISS on the coin shop I elected to give the deer a break and went along. My dealer apparently had been buying quite a bit of gold and silver this week as there were a ton of new coins available which I had NOT planned on drooling over. I had ordered a few more 2009 Silver Eagles (last ones this year) and they had arrived which meant I had to walk away from all those other coins screaming "Take Me Home" now! So sad leaving all those beautiful little orphans lying there! But some times a man has to do what a man has to do! (I had sunglasses on so no one could see the tears!!!) :'(

The only way I could get these Eagles was to have my dealer hold them for me if and when he got them. He had advised me two weeks ago there would be two rolls of 2009s coming so I requested he hold eight of them for me. At this time silver, especially Eagles, bars or rounds, are disappearing immediately after he buys them. About 3 weeks ago I gave him a call to check on availability and his answer was "I have plenty in stock". I planned my trip for Saturday only to find, when I arrived, two fellows came in and bought every Eagle he had. They wanted them all. It seems this is very common in our area now so I basically had to resort to special ordering them which I did. Another problem is many dealers can't get them even if they do have a buyer so I was just lucky this time especially since its Xmas season and thats not to mention silver is a hot commodity right now. I do regret not having the funds to grab one of the gold pieces yesterday and I probably should have let my little guy get one as he had the funds available. Guess there is always tomorrow! :'(

Ya know, every "set" of the 1982 pennies I've seen for sale in the last 20 or so yrs seem to have ONLY 7 in their set. Why not 8 to make it a complete set? Even with the slightly higher cost, I think they'll sell quite readily.

Well I made my last 2009 trip to my local coin dealer today in hopes of finally picking up some Territorial Quarters for friends (I don't want them) and a few rolls of the latest Lincoln cents for the year. My dealer only had 3 rolls of the D Lincolns and 4 of the P rolls so I took them all but not sure why other than the fact we don't see any in circulation at this time. My oldest son was also looking for proof Presidential dollars from 07 and 08 so I picked them up as well. The Presidential proofs are gaining a little steam at this time so I had to pay a premium to get them.
We talked for a while before my dealer told me he had purchased a few Silver Eagles a few hours earlier. I cherry picked some badly cared for Eagles and ended up with a 1988 and a 1992 to add to my stash. I was almost ready to leave when I noticed a nice selection of Morgan Dollars and could not resist! Again I was cherry picking AU and Unc. coins until I decided on two to bring home! Darn silver is going to get the best of me before this is all over!!! Can anyone point me in the direction of a good support group or am I already talking to them? ;D

There's no cure Terry for what you've got! Or for what I've got! I still have my Morgans even though I sold my CC's while I was laid off from work over 2 years ago. The only reason I sold them at all was because I made a handsome PROFIT! But, alas, the money made all went to pay bills! But I still retain a large part of my Morgan collection, in grades from Good to MS-63. I am missing only a few dates (all the scarcer ones of course, and all the CC's!). My Morgans will probably be the LAST thing to go if it ever gets that bad financially for us.. Oh, well!  :(

I lost my big paying job in the fall of 2005 and it didn't take long to sell much of my collection which included a full set of Morgan dollars that lacked only the 1895 proof. At least 60% of them were unc.s. I also sold all my gold,  :'( a full set of V-nickels, a full set of Buffalo nickels, a full set of Mercury dimes, Franklin half dollars, Sacagawea Dollars,  a U.S. Type set (complete), a complete set of Kennedy halves, over 100  Silver Eagles and much more! Quite honestly it was a huge blow to my collection but they served a purpose when they needed to. I might mention I made very very good money on most of it. And, after a few months I started over again and still going!

Well now Terry, I don't feel so bad!  :) I had to sell a lot of stuff (mostly U.S.) to pay the bills. That's when I decided to get away from collecting U.S. stuff per se. I still pick up a few things here & there, but I've gotten much more into world coins now that my budget has shrunk drastically due to a reduction in my wages. But, hey, I'm still as happy as a hog in slop to be able to at least collect SOMETHING! Sounds to me like you had it worse than I did being laid off!  >:(

The company I worked for eliminated my job, cut my wages drastically to place me in an entry level job and then tried to work me like a healthy 20 year old 12 hours a day at least 3 to 4 days a week. I did it for a month and moved on to another low paying company hoping to move upward once again. Didn't work out so I jumped to other job offers until finally ending up where I am currently. Seems it took me most of my life to get to the top and I am now working my way back to the bottom? Lot of co-workers with me now that have suffered the same cost saving moves by companies in the past few years.
I have done just the opposite of you as I was collecting silver Euro's and other foreign coins very heavily until my bubble burst! Now I am mostly silver, silver bullion or U.S. coins once again. As for the gold well I don't care what country its from when I can afford to buy it but gold is scarce in this area and has been for quite some time. My little guy has picked up a couple of pieces the past few months and I have managed one British half soverign. Guess that is better than nothing! ;)

Like I mentioned before Terry, both gold and silver are plentiful in my neck of the woods. You ever want anything in particular, just ask, I'll be happy to pick it up for you!  :)

What price range are the silver Eagles going for? I'd be interested in purchasing one (dependent on the price)

Anna unless you are interested in a specific date we should have the 2010's sometime in mid-Jan. but I don't have a clue what they will be selling for. I bought two Eagles Saturday for $19 each so they will probably run $21 to $23 if silver does not make a large jump between now and then. One thing is for certain if our Lady wants an Eagle the collectors over here will make sure one is put on a turtle and headed your way when you are ready for it! ;)

A nice new shiny 2010 sounds good - might wait a little.

The U.S. Mint released 2010 Silver Eagles on Jan. 19th to authorized buyers. Early reports say they sold 2,440,000 eagles on opening day. I read a report today that says gold and silver will continue to slid downward so we may get our Eagles a bit cheaper than anticipated and this downturn will benefit our Medallion Quest as well. I am keeping my eye on things! ::)
