Coin Show
April 30, 2009, 04:58:39 PM
I've been to a total of two coin shows.

One was the ANA Convention in Denver, and the other was one I just stumbled across in Pueblo (CO).

Just found out there will be a big show in Grand Junction (CO) tomorrow at The Mariott.  I will be in GJ to cover high school baseball, so will put in an appearance.  Doubtful that I'll buy anything, but if I see coins the grandkids might like, I'll probably make a purchase.

At least I'll have the opportunity to look at coins, and wish I was wealthy.

 :) :) :) :)

You never win any of those Internet Lotteries?  I might go to a show tomorrow but haven't really made up my mind yet on it. I went to one of our local shows about five years ago and I swear I saw stuff there that was there from the previous year. I can only go to these when I'm on vacation and Sunday will be my last day. I'm not sure whether it will be worth it.

Good show.

Nice dealers.

About 40 tables.

Bought ASE's for the grandkids.

My first ever Nazi coin, dated with my birth year -- 1942.

Large German bank notes 1910, 1910, 1935.  For $1.50 each.

French note issued during their Revolution -- $1.50.

And, was given several DC Quarters in change.

I found out that the coin show will come along every spring.  Used to be spring and fall, and now just springtime.

 :) :) :) :)

They are very neat, and I can't believe how cheap.

I don't have a bank note collection, but I'll keep those I got at the show on a shelf to show friends who drop by.

Take notice of the prices for the 2 Mark and the 5 Mark (1936 to 1939 - both coins) German Third Reich coins. They have a swastika in a wreath on the reverse. Last late summer and fall I was purchasing these from eBay for close to $6 ea., which INCLUDED postage. Now look at the prices......around $9 ea + postage.....just a tip.

Sir Goose, last month at a club show, I was going thru a pile of 2 Reichsmark coins at a dealers table. They were $6 each. I picked out the best looking coin I could find, brought it home, only to find out that it was a DOUBLED DIE on the reverse (swastika side). Awesome! Out of all those coins I looked thru, I picked out a winner, but did not see it until I got home! Sorry, I tried to scan the coin to show the doubling, but it didn't come out good!  :)

I forgot to mention that my coin is a 10 pfennig.

Can't grade coins, but I would guess it's about fine.

Nighthawk, I was not aware of a DDR. What yr and mint mark is your coin? Also, I noticed that these swastika coins can't be sold by eBay in Italy, France, or Austria. I believe this coin might be a winner for increased prices.

Also, I've taken a huge liking for the 1935, 1936, 1938, and 1945 (only yrs minted) New Guinea 1 shilling coin...with a hole. They are a beautiful coin, .925 silver, and comparitively low mintaged.

Goose, my coin is dated 1939D. I know this dealer very well, and if you are interested I can pick some 2 or 5 R'marks for you at the next show. The 2's are I think $6 ea. I'm not sure about the 5's, but I know that last month this guy had a huge pile of both denominations. I can check on it for you if you like! Just let me know.  ;D

I'm saving up for our BIG show here in Michigan, on Thanksgiving weekend. 200+ dealer tables!  :)

I went to the last one right after Thanksgiving.  All I came home with was this:

Which I lamented that I didn't buy when it was auctioned by Heritage back in 2007, it is the nicest small sized note on this charter from this town.  It is from my grandfather's hometown, I have another large sized note on this town also.

Then there was this Parrott shell from a battle in 1863:

One of those things you don't set out to buy at a coin show, but this is totally kewl.  It weighs a bit over 20lbs.

So I set out to MSNS that fall with low expectations, but was very very pleasantly surprised especially with the National from MO.

Nighthawk,
The only Papua New Guinea pre-decimal coins I have are:

Halfpenny
   1936   -   1
Shilling
   1935   -   1
   1936   -   4
   1938   -   1
   1945   -   2

I will have a look through my coin archive to see where I have 'hidden' them.  All my coins are off-site and are generally stored haphazardly in a numbered box with on average 700 other coins. Depending on time, I'll have a look for one of my 1936 shillings, but I'll not guarantee anything soon.
