The Many Beauties of China

One of my favourite series of paper money ever issued in China was the "Nationalities" issue from 1980-1996. Whilst many westerners think of China as a fairly homogenous population of "Chinese", actually there are many dozens of ethnic groups that make up the population of the most populous nation on earth. Many so called "minorities" number in the millions in China, they each have their own culture, many their own language etc. This series featured many lovely ladies in depicting the nationalities of this great land. Here on the 2 Jiao note are represented Pu Yi and Korean groups. This note is P882.





The 5 Jiao note features Miao and Zhuang girls as the vignette. This note is P883.





The 1 Yuan note features teenage Dong and Yao girls, the original note had an engraved reverse, replaced by this lithographed reverse in 1996. This note is P884c.





This 2 Yuan note features young Hyger and Ye Yien ladies on the vignette of the note, this note was issued in 1990. It is P885b.

Sadly these notes are being replaced by coins and also with the Yuan denominated notes by notes with Chairman Mao to remind people who the Boss is.  There are still quite a few of them in circulation, particularly in the South of China, but the 2 Yuan note is one I only ever got one of from circulation, the denomination has been eliminated with the Chairman Mao series.
