Its May in Indiana
May 08, 2008, 11:54:41 PM
How do you spell May in Indiana?  Indiaapolis Motor Speedway,  Indy 500!!!  When I was younger I actually dreaded seeing the first day of June as I knew I had to wait another 11 months for the GREATEST SPECTACLE IN RACING!!! The need for speed was much greater then but I am now wound up as I have a little guy who is going to get some time at the track this month. (Finally mommy thinks he is old enough) Can't wait to introduce him to the BRICKYARD!!!  And, who does this little 6 year old want to meet? DANICA PATRICK? Well at least he likes the women!!! ;D Should be a great time as there is nothing like that first time at Indy regardless how old you are so I love to take newcomers to the track!

The Indy 500 is one of those sporting events that I can remember watching avidly even when I was like 5-6 years old, back in the days of AJ Foyt and Johnny Rutherford.  I met AJ once, at his Honda dealership in Kingwood TX a few years ago, neat guy.  You would think he would be driving around in some souped up Acura or something, but he has a little Honda Civic hatchback from the early 1980's that he puts around in.

I have loved the race since the 1950s.

When it used to be on a time-delayed telecast, I would not listen to it on the radio in the morning, and then watch it in the afternoon on TV.

Back in the 50s, I remember being at a friend's house, and then getting home late in the afternoon.  I can still recall asking my Dad how Bill Voukovich did in the race, and the answer "He's dead."  That took a little glitter off the race for me, for a few years.

As I have related to Twoshadows, I hope to come to Indianapolis some day and watch the race.

 :D :D :D :D

Through the years there have been changes at the track. The snake pit is gone, the streakers are gone, the hippies are gone but the vastness of it all still remains. Today was Fast Friday as all the drivers would be preparing for Pole Day tomorrow. Intended to pull the little guy out of school to spend the day at the track but, wouldn't you know it, the school was having a program the boy did not want to miss! And quite frankly the weather turned rather chilly and damp after a couple of days of rain. Will have to hit it next week!

I have photos here of me and Johnny Rutherford, Bobby Unser and AJ Foyt. I actually worked for my local newspaper in the 80s and 90s as a freelance photographer so it put me in some very interesting places! You got any idea how HARD it was to get AJ's autograph? :'( I took a nice close up of AJ the next to last year he raced and had him sign a 11X14 the next year. He mellowed over time but was still a commanding personality at the Speedway and still remains so today.

I have a tremendous amount of memories from the track through the years and, like Vegas, what happens at the track stays at the track.  ;D And of course, years ago, there was NOT much more going on in Indiana so the month of May was our Hoosier Xmas!!!  Only it was almost 30 days long!

When I was younger the definition of having a good time at Indy was described like this.

"If you wake up in the middle of 17th street wearing a Marion County Sheriffs Deputy's shirt you had a good time!"

Now Old Dan, I think the boy MUST have seen Danica on TV or a magazine or something? She ain't no bigger than a minute but boy is it a good lookin' minute!!! ;D

Well we have a break in the rain so the little guy and I will be joined by Mommy, who elected to take the day off today, to keep us from chasing wild women at the track. Will leave in a bit so I decided we will celebrate Paint Your Wagons birthday at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway! Should be a lot of action today as rain has played havoc with the schedule all week.
Will be thinking about you Gary and do hope you will someday lay eyes upon this giant spectacle and the racing history that has come out of it! Seeing it for the first time is pretty overwhelming.

Wha, no chasing of Danica?  Better watch out or she might run you over.

Well we split early to avoid the traffic but left plenty of money behind for Danica. Three Danica T-Shirts made the trip home. It was worth buying something just to get her plastic bag! They are "keepers"! Also lots of sexy Danica photos with autograph but more than this tightwad wanted to pay. I will catch her near the gate one of these days and get that autograph for FREE! For the little guy of course!!!
Didn't warm up till about 1:00 as the wind kept it pretty cool this morning. Still can't believe I FORGOT ear plugs today!!! What a dumb mistake! Huh, what did you say? ;D
