Turkish Mint releases a new commemorative coin
December 30, 2007, 07:51:09 AM
By the new year, the Turkish State Mint releases a new commemorative coin depicting the Chora Church / Museum located in Istanbul.

The coin is silver proof as most of the latest TR comm. coins.

About the Chora Chuch (copy from Wikipedia):

The buiilding is considered to be one of the most beautiful examples of a Byzantine church, and is situated in the western, Edirnekapı district of Istanbul.

In the 16th century, the church was converted into a mosque by the Ottoman rulers, and it became a secularised museum in 1948.
The interior of the building is covered with fine mosaics and frescoes.

Thanks for the information RenaL.

Very nice looking coin and I like the look of the building.  It is great that we look after some of our old buildings and art.
