Commodus - Roman
November 10, 2007, 11:32:52 AM
Commodus
Mar/Apr 177 - 31 Dec 192 A.D.
Silver Denarius
Fair, 1.720g, 16.6mm, 187 A.D.
RIC 160 BMC 227, RSC 966

Commodus' twelve year rule degenerated into debauchery, paranoia and insanity.
He believed he was Hercules reincarnated and fought in gladiatorial contests. The empire was directed by his unscrupulous favorites while he amused himself in whatever decadent way he saw fit. Most romans saw his assassination as a blessing.

Neat! :D

I was wondering what the reverse type was - I couldn't make it out from the pic. Thanks for posting the catalogue references! ;)

Reverse type; Virtus (Roman minor deity / personification of Valour) standing holding spear and Victory, shield at feet.

Here's the Wildwinds page for this coin.

KoCT #21

The early bird gets the worm, sure, but the second mouse gets the cheese.

Sap,
Here's the best I cold garner about this coin...
OBV: M COMM ANT - P FEL AVG BRIT, Laureate head right.
REV: VIRTVT AVG PMTR P XII IMP VIII COS V P P, Virtus standing left, Victory in right, resting left hand on shield, spear leaning on left arm.
Hope that helps,
