Where's The Nickels?
November 14, 2008, 05:34:20 PM
November is half gone, and I still have not seen a single 2008 nickel.

I've been looking for them for my collection, my wife's, and also for Triggersmob.

I've tried my bank, my credit union, my friends who are clerks in stores, and of course my daily pocket change.

Anybody have any idea why there are no 2008 nickels in circulation, at least in western Colorado?

 :) :) :) :)

Gary, we have the same problem in West Australia (W.A.), so much so that we recon that W.A. means wait awhile.

I am only just starting to see Scout $1 coins in circulation now. Other Aussie members have seen them months ago.

Ah, but Triggersmob, wasn't it WA that all the unc mules were delivered to initially? I've been waiting a long, long time for one of those to appear in my change ...... in any grade!

I've seen 2008's in all denominations, especially nickels and quarters. I'll keep my eye out for some nice new nickels.

Does anyone still need 2008 nickels? I've been roll searching lately and have been seeing plenty of them. I'm about to go through another ten rolls and I'll be very surprised if I don't find any '08's. They'll be circulated of course.

Adam,

At your convenience, please send me a couple.

I'll mail one to Triggersmob, and put the other in my collection.

Thanks.

With the economy in the crapper I am afraid we are going to see coins later, and in smaller mintages.  Come to think of it, the most recent nickel I have gotten is a 2007 - and I don't even see the new 2004 onwards nickels that much.

Ok everybody. At the moment all I have on hand a 08 D's. Give me 3 or 4 days to see if any P's turn up, and then I'll get this organized.

Well, I hit the 2008 nickel jackpot today, lol. Plenty of P's and D's. I already have the address for the headquarter of Burke Turtle Service, so Gary I will send some for you and some for Triggersmob. Nevol, I think I may have your address somewhere, but please PM it to me just in case I can't find it, and I'll send you some nickels. I'll probably have both packages in the mail in the morning.

Thanks Adam,

Believe it or not, I STILL HAVEN'T seen a 2008 nickel!!

While I'm working at the hospital gift shop this afternoon, I'll go through a bag of nickels, but I'm sure the result will be the same.  Just not any in western Colorado.

I've heard alot of people say that actually. I actually had someone on another forum who didn't believe me when I told him I had some, lol. I had to post pictures  ;D
I've been joking that all of them must have gotten shipped straight to Missouri.

Adam,

The nickels were received in Saturday's mail.

Thank you very much.

These are the first 2008 nickels I have seen!!

I will include Triggersmob's nickels in the same mailing as his medals and the silver dollar he won.

Again, thanks very much.

My apologies Adam!  Yes, they have arrived, sometime last week.  I completely forgot to let you know they were here.

My memory is getting worse these days. Short term is almost non-existant.

I haven't decided what to send you yet, but will try to find something that might interest you. Do you collect Aussie or foreign coins, any interest in varieties/errors?

Here it is March, 2009, and I have yet to see a 2008 nickel.

I asked a bank teller "why" the other day, and she said she had no idea.

On a more positive note, I do get 2008 coins in change all the time.  Just not nickels.

I've even received Harrison Dollars in change.  Sure wish they would discontinue the paper money, and get those metal dollars circulating.

I found some D.C. quarters last week. The 2008 nickels were slow geting out but I see a lot of them now. Both P and D which is kind of unusual becouse we don't often get the D's around here.

I'll be in Grand Junction tomorrow, Friday, and next Tuesday.  The sad part is that my coin store is no more.

Grand Junction has about 100.000 residents if you go to Palisade at the east end, and Fruita to the west.

Now wouldn't you think a city of 100,000 would have a coin shop?  Delta has about 5,000 residents, and no coin shop.  Up the road 20 miles is Montrose with about 16,000 people.  Can't find a coin shop there.

Looks like I'm just going to have to go to the likes of Coast to Coast and get my coins by mail order.

From my perspective it would seem Grand Junction NEEDS a local coin collector to START a coin shop. Someone with numismatic knowledge and world connections? Maybe someone who is semi-retired or going to retire? Drag Mommy into the mix and a business is born?

Actually I think the U.S. Mint is making a huge effort to put the screws to all those Ebayers who are pre-selling the 2009 Lincoln cents. Many of them were getting $20 to $40 a roll for them. What in the world are people thinking? Doesn't appear to be any economy problems with the fools on Ebay!  None the less, those who were getting those prices, now do NOT have the coins to deliver so sooner or later Ebay MUST act on these stupid pre-sale auctions.
Anyway LET me know if any of you stumble onto a few extra rolls.

I've often thought I would love to own a coin store.

However, my previous store went out of biz due to the economy.

This semi-retired teacher doesn't have the tens of thousands needed for inventory, let alone funds for a building and insurance.

Nice thought though.  If I was in my 20s again, and was more adventurous, I might try it.

Meanwhile I'm still looking for a store.  Was in Grand Junction today and searched around for one, with no luck.  The yellow pages also haven't been helpful.

I have e-mailed the former coin store owner and asked her if other shops exist in the area, and she should respond soon.
