Baseball Cards
February 20, 2009, 06:39:48 AM
Back in the late 70s,early 80s,I was really into US commems and libery nickels, and had quite a collection of each...But then came the Baseball card craze and in the mid 80s,I slowly sold everything and bought Sports cards to sell at local shows and I actually did quite well for a time, until the card manufacturers flooded the market and killed the hobby

Which brings me to 2004 when i got back into coin and medal collecting.....i guess my question is,Did anyone here ever leave the hobby to pursue a completely different area and then return or am I the only one?

Regarding myself, I stoped collecting coins and started collecting stamps. Then stopped collecting anything for more than 15 years. Returned back to the hobby of coin collecting since 2006.  :)

Did you sell off your coins to buy the stamps or do you still have them?

I started as a world coin collector, and when i left the hobby i didnt sell anything. But, when i became active again i kept only the Egyptian coins and nearly traded or sold most of my world coins.
I am now collecting Egyptian and US coins only plus some selected coins from UK and Australia.  :)

I had an awesome baseball card collection from the mid-1960's as I was growing up. One day my mother was cleaning up the basement, and she says "John, what do you want to do with all this junk" (meaning "baseball cards")? I told her "throw it away for all I care!" So she did! Probably would have been worth a small fortune today. Oh, well! I started collecting coins at about 10 years of age (1971) when a elderly gentleman on my paper route paid me with Buffalo nickels, Mercury dimes, silver certificates, etc. at face value. Well that got me hooked! I still have an old, worn out 1917 Buffalo nickel that I got from him in my collection to this day and will NEVER part with it! I collected off and on over the years, but then in 1999 with the first issue of State quarters, I got back into it in full swing, and have been there ever since! Over the past few years I sold off a lot of my U.S. coins mainly because I was laid off from my job and needed the money to pay bills. So I still wanted to collect coins. That's when I started to gravitate towards world coin collecting and that is where I have pretty much stayed from back then till now. I also got into stamp collecting on a limited basis (like I needed another hobby!) a few years ago. I collect worldwide stamps with birds, airplanes, and flowers on them, and I am also a big time collector of Nazi Germany stamps, covers and postcards.  ;D

My dad got me started with coins when I was about 9. from around 14-22 I got out of it, but would occasionally pull out my coins and admire them. Shortly after turning 22 I was desperate for money. So I started going through my collection, trying to figure out how much I could sell it for. That reminded me how much I liked coins, so I sold my car instead of my collection. That was over three years ago, and I have been back into the hobby hard core ever since.

I started collecting when my brother got an Indian Head penny in change. I was so jealous I collected Buffalo nickels....100s of them. T I then branched out and began to collect the other U S denominations. ONLY after joining this forum, I began to collect foreign coins (I collected Canadian coins all along) and I've gone a little overboard......GOOD! I now have silver coins from at least 53 countries with a few neat copper/bronze coins thrown in.
