Novelty or new trend ?
March 26, 2008, 10:08:35 PM
The last few days I saw several Oval instead of round silver coins being offered on ebay germany
One of them struck me as extremely clever .
The attached coin is reported to have been presented on the Berlin coinshow 2008
It is aptly called Illusion
It shows
1 The head of Don Quixote (ancient spelling)
2 under the helmet Don Quijote riding on his horse
3 under the helmet and following Don Quijote Pancho

It toke me half an hour to find Pancho
PS the price of the attached link is much too high I got mine 23% cheaper
For the first time in my live I bought a coin in the year it was issued but of coarse it will take the usual 14 days to reach me
2500 pieces silver from Palau ( where else)

This reminds me of Salvador Dali's paintings. He used illusions a lot.

Thanks for sharing and for the link.

Me?

I prefer silver to gold for my collection, honestly. I very rarely buy gold.

Do add this coin to my collection?

I had the gold 1/10 ounce from Equatorial Guinea but was not impressed so I sold it a couple of years ago. I tried repeatedly to buy the 1 ounce silver but was outbid. I sure did not know the larger silver was out there! Is it a recent date? Sure wish it was available when silver was somewhat cheaper!

That Don Quixote coin is one of the most bizarre, and forgive me, ugliest coins I have ever seen.
WOW!! It's really disturbing.

When I was at Univ there was that LP I think by Santana with a Lion head on the cover and inside the lion head you could find like 64 different people
I never found them all . Here three people to find is doable .
The most disturbing coin to me is from two Islands Kirabati and .... well the first and the last island to go into the year 2000
That coin is zig zag sawn in two puzzle pieces yuck .
My best american boss I ever had said to me he found my BMW 323 i the most ugly car he had ever seen  :D

In french they say love and taste are undiscussable  ;D

I can understand that but I want my coins to be quoted daily on the money exchange to know my pension is safe and to be honest
the idea that by opening the capsule sulphurous air will attack my silver coin is too much for me .
If I open the capsule of the most expensive gold proof 999 gold nothing whatsoever short of phosporic acid can attack that coin
If I breath on it and it gets condensation spots I simple wash it in acetone at room temperature and even under magnification nobody can see
I drooled on the coin  :D
And god knows I bought some coins which looked like people sneezel on them etc
I even have an english sovereign my dog opened for me (no joke) I was able to get the blister plastic of the coin in one night of acetone
Imagine PCGS having to say MS64 with one dog tooth  :D Or MS64 dog operated  :D

Ok I made a mistake it is a 12 ounce 0.999 silver from Spain and it does not even say it is a coin
No year of emission nor pieces minted given .
I never in my life saw that piece before but then my knowledge of silver is close to zero

SPANIEN
Motiv:                    Die nackte Maja (Maja desnuda)
Material:               Silber 999/1000
Gewicht:              372 g / 12 oz. (Unzen)
Durchmesser:    89 mm (8,9 cm)
Dicke:                   8 mm
Qualität:                Polierte Platte (PP)

I hope there is a certificate with the thing explaining when it was minted and the numbers and the year
If not I will have to surf the internet

There is no such thing as an ugly BEEMER!!!

In Europe BMW has a different price in every country . The richer the country is the more you pay .
Belgium has allways been on the low end of the costcurve . I have had 5 Beemers in my life the last three
end of series with large reductions and large option packs.
They rearended my previous 13 year old BMW when I was standing still on the motorway in Brussels the car had only 260 000 kilometer  ;D
( 2005 and my lawyer is still trying to get full recompensation from the counterinsurance a big name bank also doing insurance and I had to invoke permanent injuries since they wanted to wave me off with 600 euro cause the car was too old . Well I now am awarded by three courtspecialists 2% permanent invalidity and 6 months like 40% for rib damage called pain rcompensation so now they are fighting it out about the money recompensation but it cost them like 5000 allready and they paid like a 1200 downpayment allready . Bless America for learning me to use a lawyer  ;D)

Anyways I bought in 2006 the last of the end of series Coupé CSI 2000 cc Beemers getting a large reduction and free computer steered airco and 6 CD stero radio pack and improved upholstery and metalic color and tinted windows and power steering and a lot of extras coming to at least
3000 $ in free equipment . This is the first BMW I got where I do not have to wind down the windows manually ; also the first with power steering ; also the first with original airco etc ) They upped the price on the new model like 30%  ;D
I hope it lasts me 15 years ( So I will have to be living and driving another 13 years  ::)

Oh, regarding the question! Oval coins have been around for quite some time and will probably continue but as commemoratives for collectors only. I have an oval Titanic Expedition Commemorative (Liberia)that actually has a small piece of coal, raised from the Titanic, embedded in the coin. The coal was raised prior to the international call to halt further recoveries from the lost ship. If I remember correctly the mintage was 999 and YES I did pay dearly to get it!!! That coal, last I heard, was valued at $2,000 an ounce!  :o

Gees, my sister has a couple of lumps of coal that came from the Titanic, I would have gotten one if I knew they were worth that much.

Well I was in Berlin the day they opened the Brandenburg gate and started to demolish the wall .
( I was there with 6 americans who drank all the free champaigne on the flight ; first time I ever hear a steward say
sory sir we ran out  :o )
I was allowed by a streetgang for 5 Dmark to hack a piece of about 1 kilo out of a grafitied part of the wall .
I hear later on they graffitied their concrete garage boxes and sold cuts up to 50 Dmark a piece for a fake .

I wonder what my original is worth now  ;D

I also wondered into EastBerlin the day the wall was opened and 5 minutes down Unter Dem Linden is the Pergamon (sp?) museum
were Hitler put Turkish temples under a museum roof  ::)
I was so tired I went to sit on the floor of a thousand year old temple and one of the former protectors ( they were all heavy muscled women )
came to tell me in German I could not sit on a thousand year old temple . So I pretended not to understand german and told her in English to piss off ; which she did . Together with the fall of the wall the authority had gone .
Anyway I wish I had brought part of the temple cause in the first days after the fall of the wall there seemed to be no operating authority where englishspeaking persons were concerned

Scott,
I happen to have a lump of coal from the Titanic as well. I was in Pheonix, AZ a few years back, and the Titanic Exhibit was there. There is a section of the hull suspended from the ceiling, and a small piece of the hull under some clear acrylic with a hole in it, so you could actually touch a piece of the ship. If anyone gets the chance to see it, it's very thought provoking, with all the small relics (shoes, letters, luggage...), plus a recreation of the Grand Stair Case.
