Title: Notegeld
Post by: Humpybong on November 07, 2015, 04:41:11 PM
Just in case you do not know what notegeld is:

Notgeld
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Different examples of German notgeld notes, 1917-19

Notgeld (German for "emergency money" or "necessity money") refers to money issued by an institution in a time of economic or political crisis. The issuing institution is usually one without official sanction from the central government. This occurs usually when sufficient state-produced money is not available from the central bank. Most notably, notgeld generally refers to money produced in Germany and Austria during World War I and the Interbellum. Issuing institutions could be a town's savings banks, municipality and private or state-owned firms.

Notgeld was mainly issued in the form of (paper) banknotes. Sometimes other forms were used, as well: coins, leather, silk, linen, postage stamps, aluminium foil, coal, and porcelain; there are also reports of elemental sulfur being used, as well as all sorts of re-used paper and carton material (e.g. playing cards). These pieces made from playing cards are extremely rare and are known as Spielkarten, the German word for "playing card".

Notgeld was a mutually-accepted means of payment in a particular region or locality, but notes could travel widely. Notgeld is different from occupation money that is issued by an occupying army during a war.

Well here in Australia we have a member of a couple of the coin clubs I am involved with and one of his hobbies is to make up "notegeld" for the clubs.

To have a look at some examples click on the link below:

Thou art confusing the two words, Sir Humpybong. The German emergency money is called "notgeld", spelled with only one "E". The notes made by this Brisbane coin club member are known as "Notegeld". The different spelling is partly to differentiate it from "actual" notgeld, and partly because the member in question freely admits to not being the best speller.

NOT means being without something and suffering for it
It means in trouble in need in lacking etc
Notgeld means there is no money and no alternative so we print an emergency note
I suppose since the people in need had literally noting they could not coin their emergency money only print it

By definition Notgeld is utilitarian but I prefer the French Jetons

I still have a number of the notegeld available if anyone is interested.

Series 2 will be released in a month or so, so if you want a copy of series 1 then now is the time to obtain a copy.

These are a limited release and will not be re-produced.

A few of you have asked about the "Alice in Wonderland" theme on the notegeld.

For those of you who did not know....it is the 150th Anniversary of the writing of the story.

These will only be available until the end of December so get one while you can.  They will be very collectible.
