Belgium was going to release a 2 Euro Waterloo coin but France objected to it.
Instead the made a 2.5 Euro coins for collectors only.
I did manage to obtain one direct from the Belgium Mint.

Gee 2.5 sounds like an odd figure to come up with but I suppose it give us collectors something else to collect ;)
-
Nice addition Ken. :)

By making the coin worth 2.5 Euros, the Belgium Mint could make the coin and sell them to collectors regardless of what France felt about the coin.
-
Nice, I wanted to get one of these, but didn't want to pay $25 USD for it! I also want to pick up one of the Battle of Britain 50 Pence coins without the denomination on it, but again, I don't want to pay $25 for it, once shipping is factored in from the mint!

Cool coin with a good backstory. $25 is a little much for me too, but it is tempting. Have there ever been any other 2 1/2 Euro coins made?

Yes.
Since 2008, Portugal has issued three to six NCLT coins (=made for collectors only) each year with the denomination of 2,5 Euro.
-
I paid a total of 8 pounds 58 pence for the coin, which is around 13 dollars and 36 cents.

Here's a Portuguese one that I have...

Good deal.
The coins goes for 10 Euros ( 11 US-$) here in Germany.

Not anymore.
I was at my local coin store just recently. The 2,5 Euro Waterloo coin now goes for 14-15 Euros. Why? French collectors (!) are buying them like crazy and drying up the market for this coin.
-
Looks like it is sold out from at least two dealers.

So most likely if anyone wants one, it would be an ebay purchase.
