Title: Coins from the Territory of New Guinea
Post by: Humpybong on May 20, 2015, 10:36:40 PM
These coins were used when the Territory of New Guinea was under the administration of Australia, before Papua New Guinea declared independence.

The Territory of New Guinea was an Australian administered territory from 1920 until 1975. In 1949, the Territory and the Territory of Papua were established in an administrative union by the name of the Territory of Papua and New Guinea. That administrative union was renamed as Papua New Guinea in 1971. Notwithstanding that it was part of an administrative union, the Territory of New Guinea at all times retained a distinct legal status and identity until the advent of the Independent State of Papua New Guinea.

Most of the Territory of New Guinea was occupied by Japan during World War II, between 1942 and 1945.

Just purchased these as I only had one coin, then I was given a few more and now have a good selection.  I do not have the 1929 Specimen halfpenny and penny.

All of these coins have a hole through the centre for the practical reason that the majority of the people who would use these coins did not have pockets or purses to put them in; instead they would string them onto a cord and wear them around their neck.
Because of the hole in the coins, they do not have a portrait of the ruling British monarch; instead they have either his name and titles in Latin (on the 1929 coins and all the shillings) or their abbreviation (on the rest of the coins).

Hope you enjoy!

Cool additions to your collection Barry.  I usually pick up forigen coins with holes in them when I find them for a good price.
