Marcus Aurelius was recognized by Hadrian, Antoninius Pius adopted him, and he married Antoninius' daughter, Faustina II. He succeeded Antoninius, immediately proclaiming Lucius Verus his co-emperor. Although known for his adherence to Stoicism and as naturally peaceful, his reign was disturbed by war with Parthia, plague and a long, hard war on the Danube frontier.
