That Sydney token is quite nice. Might you know the approx. date of it?

Goose, I see 1857 on it.
Kitty, very nice coins. I think I see cats on some of them.

Steve is absolutely correct, the date is 1857. I purchased it from a retired dealer here in SA for a pretty good bargain, and as much as I love it I don't really know a whole lot about the token, or tokens in general. I mean I know they served as small change when currency was scarce and some merchants gave them as change to "encourage" their customers to return to their stores (since they weren't acceptable anywhere else.)
There are a few lions up there, standard issue on Spanish coins for that era. ;) However, I haven't really picked up many new Kittycoins as of late.

Nice coins Kitty.
Glad to see that you are thinking of us "aussies" when you add to your collection.
;D

Thanks for pointing that out Steve.....I really didn't notice the date.

Hanks and Compy. Token.....
A round copper token (34 mm dia) featuring the name and business of the issuer:
Hanks and Co. , Australian Tea Mart Sydney
The reverse features an Arms of New South Wales supported by a kangaroo and emu.
Copper One Penny Token, minted by W.J. Taylor, London. Issued by Hanks & Co, Australian Tea Mart, Sydney, 1857. J.G. Hanks joined A. Lloyd to open a business in 1855. In 1858 the company had changed its name, becoming Hanks & Co. It seems that Lloyd was still participating in the business, but he had always been the junior partner. In 1861 the founder's son, John L. Hanks, opened another 'Tea and Coffee Merchants' business trading as J. G. Hanks & Co. The junior Hanks' business endured until almost the end of the nineteenth century. J.G. Hanks left his original business in 1863 and joined his son's enterprise.

An excellent resume' of that token Barry, thanks. Now I'll have to find one similar to that one.
