My elder daughter is six years old, she is much more interested than her younger sister regarding coin collecting. She always sits beside me when i am enjoying my hobby asking many questions and even while i am posting on KOTCT :)
I have been trying to educate her as far as she can understand about coins and how to preserve them. I printed a world map "with countries labled" and gave her some world coins to arrange in her album just to help her know where did these coins come from.
Everything was fine until yesterday, when she came to me after school informing me what was the homework her English teacher asked her to do through the weekend.
They were given a sheet of paper with the opposites (smooth, rough, soft and hard..etc) and the children are asked to stick wit glue something to resemble the meaning infront of each word in an empty square.
The teacher said that for the word;
Smooth.......stick a piece of aluminum foil "OK"
Rough........stick a piece of sandpaper "OK"
Soft.......stick a piece of cotton "OK"
Hard....... out of all the hard things in the world the teacher asked the children to stick a coin "well, thats not OK with me" :'(
Its great when the school you send your children to learn at destroys what your children has already learned :(
My daughter came to me and asked what she should do?
I told her that she has to do her homework exactly as her teacher asked her to do, but she has to tell her teacher that she collects coins and this way the coin will be ruined.
Is this the right thing to do, or am i exagerating?

MAYBE SHE COULD STICK A "PICTURE" OF A COIN ON HER ASSIGNMENT AND EXPLAIN WHY SHE DID NOT BRING IN A REAL COIN TAPED TO THE PAPER---I TAUGHT SCHOOL FOR ALMOST 35 YEARS AND I WOULD HAVE ACCEPTED THAT AS PART OF THE ASSIGNMENT.

Amr, we all know how we feel about taping or gluing coins etc.. Why not just this once find an old, worn coin from circulation and have her tape/glue it to her paperwork? It's not like you are taking a mint state or proof coin and damaging it right? Just a suggestion. :)

Maybe use a coin that is in a 2x2.

If she is anything like my daughter who is also six years old, effort will not be lost. I am pestered by her about her coins all the time. She wants new plastic pages, more coins, more banknotes etc all time. She can find countries on the map that she has travelled to and has coins from. Already at six years old she has been in Asia, Europe, and N. America. She enjoys her Chinese coins the most, because they are odd shaped, have square holes or are huge sized, or tiny( a little gold coin). My older kids tried collecting, but really don't show much interest in it. She maybe only one that will be collector.

You are describing my daughter :) except that she hasn't travelled abroad yet :)

My daughter has lived in three different countries by age six - she will likely have this wanderlust like I do not to stay anywhere too long.
