One of the great advantages of working offshore for a living is you sometimes get access to some very neat stuff.
I couple of years ago I rescued a set of chart draws from the bridge of a boat that was being scrapped.
The last few weeks I have stripped and re-varnished them. Today I built the frame for the base. I also ordered a custom cut sheet of 5mm safety glass to build the top part.
After two years its finally beginning to look like it might be a nice coin storage system. I will make updates to this post as I progress.

Looks like you have rescued a coin collectors dream. I will have to keep my eyes open for something of that nature as I really like the idea of looking at huge numbers at the same time. Thanks for sharing!

Very nice Richard! :)

I admit some of my coin and model train collecting storage implements were castoffs from my days in the petroleum producing, refining, and marketing company. I have several model trains and some coins still stored in old drilling core sample boxes that are a bit larger than the regular coin storage boxes.
BTW love the rich finish on the wood, just beautiful.

The only bad thing about the wood cigar box is that every one that sees it wants it. ;D

I think box collectors would pay more for the box then the coins :D ;)

I AM SUCH A PACK RAT THAT I HAVE TROUBLE GIVING OR SELLING THESE CIGAR BOXES..........THE ARTWORK ON THE INSIDE OF THE CARDBOARD BOXES IS QUITE COLLECTABLE........AT THE TURN OF THE CENTURY--1900--DETROIT WAS ONE OF THE LEADING MAKERS OF CIGARS IN THE U.S.........AS A KID IT WAS A REAL TREASURE TO GET A CIGAR BOX.....THOSE WERE OUR FIRST SAFETY DEPOSIT BOXES......

Yes, I have a few Cuban cigar boxes, one of them is the cash box for our family bank, where our little Duchy's currency is kept.

Over the years I've been fortunate enough to have found several of these boxes, and have a small collection of mainly plain Janes. What I look for are those with dove-tail joints, and these are hard to find and then they cost an arm and a leg if the person knows what he has.

Very nice cigar boxes Gene.
Great bargain Joe
We would have quarantine problem here in OZ if we imported them. They might have to be treated for possible insect infestation.

Worked some more on the base today
Today I cut and fitted the side panels. I also fitted stiffeners to the back which will be left open. There are two electrical outlets on the wall where it's going and I want access to them the for the top lights.
I also put in the bottom rail on the front than the divider for the doors. Finished it off by staining the outside.
