Title: On this day in history......
Post by: Nighthawk on August 17, 2009, 02:50:28 AM
Hi all! Just thought I would start something new here. I am a lover of history, and thought maybe I'd share some interesting tid-bits from history that some of you might enjoy. I will try to post something everyday from history, but I make no promises. I will try....  On this day in 1786, Frederick the Great of Prussia died at 74 years of age. Also on this day, and in the same year, American frontiersman Davy Crockett was born.  :)

August 18...... on this day in 1227, the ruthless Mongol leader Genghis Khan died at about age 65. Born with the name Temujin, in 1206 the conquered Mongol tribes awarded him the title of Genghis Khan, which probably means "universal leader". In 1503, Pope Alexander VI (Roderigo Borgia) died on this day at age 72. Born this day in 1587 is Virginia Dare, the first English child born in what would become the United States, in the Roanoke Island colony. And on this day in 1830, Austrian Emperor Franz Joseph I is born.  :)

Also on this day, AD 14, Caesar Augustus, Rome's first Emperor, died in Nola, just north-east of Naples, one month shy of his 76th birthday. Was it death by natural causes, or was it........ murder? English poet John Dryden is born this day in 1631, and on this day in 1871, aviation pioneer Orville Wright is born in Dayton, Ohio.  :)

August 21.... on this day in 1745, the mother of future Romanov tsars, Catherine, marries, at the age of 15, Peter, at age 16, who in about 17 years would rule Russia as Peter III, for about 6 months, then have her husband strangled in prison, and take the throne, and become known as Catherine the Great. August 22..... on this day in 1485, King Richard III of England was defeated by the forces of Henry Tudor at Bosworth Field, bringing to an end the great Plantagenet dynasty, which ruled England for 332 years, and ending the Wars of the Roses, which dragged on for about 30 years. Henry Tudor became Henry VII. His dynasty lasted 118 years, and produced such notable characters as Henry VIII, Bloody Mary, and Elizabeth I.  Also on this day in 1642, the English Civil War began, and in 1864, the International Red Cross is founded by the Geneva Convention.  :)

1951 - 75,052 people watched the Harlem Globetrotters perform. It was the largest crowd to see a basketball game.  My family and I were in the stands in 1993 to see the Colorado Rockies open their inaugural season before roughly the same number of people.  Therefore, this bit of trivia brings back special memories.

1989 - Nolan Ryan became the first major league pitcher to strike out 5000 batters.  Personal note:  We saw him pitch, against Baltimore, during his final season.  It turned out to be his last really strong outing on the mound.

1889 - Boxer Jack Dempsey was defeated for the first time of his career by George LaBlanche.

This one is special to me.  Dempsey was born in Colorado, and spent part of his young life growing up here in my small town of Delta.  He lived on "Brick Yard Hill," and according to some "old timers" liked to beat up boys who were older than himself -- if they gave him a hard time.

I think I remember reading that the explosion of Krakatoa was heard in London and the dust cloud circled the Earth twice.

I could be wrong though.

Just been to Wiki and found this info...

1883 eruption of Krakatoa
While seismic activity around the volcano was intense in the years preceding the cataclysmic 1883 eruption, a series of lesser eruptions beginning in mid-June 1883 led up to the disaster. The volcano released huge plumes of steam and ash lasting until late August.

On August 27, a series of four huge explosions almost entirely destroyed the island. The explosions were so violent that they were heard 3,500 km (2,200 mi) away in Perth, Western Australia and the island of Rodrigues near Mauritius, 4,800 km (3,000 mi) away.[11] The pressure wave from the final explosion was recorded on barographs around the world, which continued to register it up to 5 days after the explosion. The recordings show that the shockwave from the final explosion reverberated around the globe 7 times in total.[10] Ash was propelled to a height of 80 km (50 mi).

The combined effects of pyroclastic flows, volcanic ashes, and tsunamis had disastrous results in the region. The official death toll recorded by the Dutch authorities was 36,417, although some sources put the estimate at more than 120,000. There are numerous documented reports of groups of human skeletons floating across the Indian Ocean on rafts of volcanic pumice and washing up on the east coast of Africa, up to a year after the eruption.

Average global temperatures fell by as much as 1.2 degrees Celsius in the year following the eruption. Weather patterns continued to be chaotic for years and temperatures did not return to normal until 1888

1961 - Mickey Mantle tied a major league baseball record for home runs when he hit the 400th of his career.

For all his faults, "The Mick" was my No. 1 sports hero.  I was fortunate enough to see him play in person in both 1961 and 1962, in Kansas City.

I have watched Roger Maris, Willie Mays, Stan Musial, Ernie Banks, and Nolan Ryan play ball, and nothing excited the fans like seeing "No. 7" come out of the dugout.

Eight years ago today residing in a small village in Ukraine with no TV, but only a very slow 9600 baud internet connection.  We had just enough internet speed to slowly load email only, couldn't hope to get on CNN or anything.  For a couple of days there, it was looking like we would be staying in Ukraine semi permanently.

Several Ukrainians came to us and offered to protect us, and you know, at that point in time and where we were, we felt like we were in the safest place in the whole world.

I was a Rockies season ticket holder for 16 years before giving them up this season.

I'm not too disappointed however.  I saw all the playoff games in Colorado in 2007, and now realize I'm better off sitting in front of the TV to watch the games.  In other words, "Been there, done that."  Now, I'll catch the action from the comfort of my office whilst downing beverage from my KOTCT mug.

I know what you mean. Beverages are outrageously priced at the ball park anyway. But as someone who only gets to go to games occasionally it is well worth it for me, if for the atmosphere if nothing else.

Adam, I understand.

I watched Mantle and Maris in both 1961 and 1962, in Kansas City.  Record attendance every game.  And, for one reason -  well actually two -- No. 7 and No. 9.  Batting practice alone was worth the price of admission.  I'd have to look in my scrapbook, but I think our box seats, four rows back from home plate, were $3.50.  The atmosphere in that ballpark was electric.  I wrote sports for 40 years, but still can't put it in words.  Ball after ball over the fence while the crowd roared.  And that was just batting practice.  Yep, that was an experience you couldn't get on TV.

Well it was a bit before my time, but one of my favourite songs.  Mary Hopkin is a fantastic singer, and kept her career in the music industry very short and sweet.  I found a CD of her first album, they made a few in the UK a few years ago but they are HARD to find.

Without looking up the answers, I only know one.  Wally Pipp was replaced by Lou.  Memory tells me that Lou had a lifetime batting average of .340.

The easy answer to the stadium question would be Yankee Stadium.  But that's not likely correct.  The Yankees were probably on the road, and I have no answer for that question.

Hit .340, and without steroids.  My, my.

1983= Beirut Lebanon, at daybreak on Sunday morning 23 October, a yellow five-ton Mercedes stake-bed truck roared into the parking lot at high speed. and then crashed though a barbed-wire barrier. The truck then moved past two sentry post, went though a gate in an iron fence, hurdled over an obstacle made of sewer pipe. plowed though a sandbag barrier, crashed though a four foot-wide door into the lobby of a 4 story building, whereupon the cargo, estimated to be the equivalent of six tons on TNT detonated.
Two hundred and thirty-nine occupants of the building were killed immediately, three were U.S.Army, eighteen were U.S. Navy and 218 were U.S. Marines More than a hundred were wounded. of these three later die.

Nov. 22 1975 USS Kennedy collided with the USS Belknap. How's that for a bizarre date coincidence?

Destroyers are nicknamed "cans" for tin cans. Although the Belknap was a cruiser the Kennedy became known as the "can opener."

We steamed with the Can Opener in the med in 1979. The Captain left night orders to be awoken if the Kennedy came within 5,000 yards of us.

Lucky us. We had to refuel from it once.
