I received an e-mail from a friend today stating that he had heard the Australian Five Cent coin was on its way out of ciculation.
Like the U.S. cent, it costs more to make than it's worth.
Any truth to this rumor?
:) :) :) :)

I heard it mentioned on the radio the other day, but I don't know if it's been confirmed.
Apparently it costs 20c to make a 5c.
Anyone else heard any more?

There's been a bit of discussion about it on a couple other forums.
This is the reason for the rumours: http://www.theage.com.au/national/5cent-piece-not-worth-a-cracker-20090522-bic4.html?page=-1
I think we'd hear about it from Treasury before anywhere else though. I reckon it would have to go through Parliament to be discussed/passed before the RAM could just announce that it's doing away with them.
