Title: Coins of the 1700's
Post by: Nighthawk on March 21, 2009, 06:35:48 AM
Anyone have any coins from the 1700's that you would like to show off? It was an interesting century to be sure! I will continue to post more pics here as they become available. I'll start off with this one: Great Britain, 1757, 6 pence, George II, KM# 582.2  ;D

Siberian type set, I completed this about 3 years ago.  No small task, the poluskha or 1/4 Kopek coin is a complete pain to find in nicer grade:

Dang, where to start?  I've got lots of coins from the 1600s and 1700s- more than I think anyone here wants to see. I guess I'll pick out a few of my favourites, but nothing compares to that Siberian Typeset. >< I've been wanting a Siberian coin for a while now; but they're expensive in decent grades!

Time I made a contribution to this thread.

Here are some 1700's coins from my OFEC collection.

Windward Islands, 12 sols 1731. The Windward Islands were the French possessions in the string of islands on the Eastern edge of the Caribbean. At the time this coin was issued, France owned everything between Guadeloupe and Grenada.

Barony of Schonau 4 heller 1755.

The Barony of Schonau was a tiny German state near Aachen, in what would be far western Germany today.

Back in the days of the Holy Roman Empire, a nobleman or city had to be formally granted the right to issue coins by the Emperor, a right normally granted to those who had done some service to the empire. And people with such a lowly rank as Baron were rarely granted this privelege.

In 1755, Baron Johann Gottfried got it into his head that he didn't need any silly old Emperor's permission to issue coins. All his neighbours were issuing coins, so he thought he'd join in the fun.

His neighbours, however, were incensed at this tiny upstart state issuing coins of its own without the permission they'd all worked hard to obtain, so they got together to put a stop to it. Their solution: invade Schonau, dethrone the Baron, annex the Barony and shut down the mint. The copper 4 heller was the only coin ever issued by this ephemeral state.

It might not be "Other World Coins" to some of you, but it is to me: the British colony of Virginia, ½ penny 1773 - the only Crown Coinage issued on behalf of any of the Colonies which would one day become the United States.

Assam silver rupee, dated 1709 in the local calendar (= 1787 AD). Assamese coins are quite distinctive: almost all of them are octagonal.

Very impressive Nighthawk. I've always wanted a coin from the 1700's, but don't have any yet. I do have some ancients that are older of course. But I really want one with a date, from the 1700's. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for the nice comments gentlemen! I was just thinking that some of these coins were manufactured before George Washington or Napoleon were even born!! What a wild century that was! The French Revolution, the American War of Independence and so on.... I think I would like to have lived back then! It must have been neat! But that's one of the cool things about coin collecting.... you're holding a piece of history in your hands and wondering about where that particular coin has been since it was made (not to mention the art work!) !!!    :)  :)  :)
