Iceland is a country I remember doing a term report on whence I was in the 7th forum.  All it has going for it besides a deteriorating fishing industry is hydropower from geothermal springs all over the country.  So aside from petrol they are pretty energy independent.  I recall that a Ms. Iceland once became Miss World about 20 or so years ago too.

She was attractive then, but just doing a google.com search on her, things have not been very good for her as well as her country lately. :(

It seems there are 200 000 inhabitants that spent like they were 20 million persons

They may well have the distinct honour of outdoing Americans for spending more than they have!

Well, while I feel sorry for them for having spent more than us, at the same time I'm relieved that someone else did!

Yeah, at least our competition is Iceland and Zimbabwe, we are only a distant third. ;D

Iceland, Zimbabwe, perhaps Italy too?  ???  Oh, and there's the UK.

I'm getting a little bothered how a few European leaders spin this unwinding as "America's fault".
It might play well at home, but it's not exactly the truth. And, just like the US, how many sounded a warning when times were "good"?

Topher, that "Iceland" is pretty funny...I'm sure it's missing the volcanoes.

as far as i know the american university schooled mathematical wizzards invented the marked to model system and  they wrote the computer model nobody understood and so they are responsible for the end of the world as we knew it
by association the american greedy  bankers who reaped the profits are responsible
and the SEC and all regulators that allowed it off balance are responsible

america started it the rest of the world is only guilty of getting as greedy shortly after

Some may perceive it as America bashing, but frankly, it is the truth.  The greed started on Wall St. and Main St. and just spread around the world like the plague.  Sure it applies on Main St. but it also applies on the Rue, the Boulevard, the Strasse and the Prospekt.

Right--Wall St. played a large part. I suppose I'm stating the obvious...I wasn't only talking about mortgage-backed investments, but the long-term abuse of credit...around the world. Certainly the average American did that in a big way, but if people I know overseas are any indicator--Europe did it too. In each case, politicians are mixing the truth with what voters want to hear. From what I hear, Iceland's problems began with borrowing too much money from central banks--which became real trouble for them when systemic problems arose.  Wall St. is to blame in a big way, but that fiasco simply exposed weaknesses across the world. (IMO)  I agree with your points too--from the little I know of the enormity of this situation.  :)

It's actually got a very large skateboard park out back.  It's always jam packed when I pass it on my drive home.  My kids have gone ice skating there on school trips.  I'll have to try it some time, as I'm a Canadian now.  I just hope I don\t break both my ankles.  Maybe I'll use my kids to break my fall.   (just kidding!)

Right now the brightest minds dare admit they do not know what the wizzkids created (but 40% comission was paid to the broker/bank)

The problem is now guestimated at one quadrillion dollars and nobody knows who own what or how to start to untangle it

The two test sales gave less then 10 cents on the dollar

In the meantime the British banks seem to have announced that bonuses will be cut by 40 % So expect the sale of yellow maseratis to
take a deep dive

I used to play hockey when our lake froze over...that doesn't happen in California.  :D
I know from learning on ice...don't start on hockey skates--no ankle support.

I am sad to report our prime minister Leterm is going to iceland to talk about helping icelands Kauphting bank which had one house and about 2000 clients in Belgium
The last save got Belgium 11% of BNP Paribas and half a billion in intrest payments every year from now on in the Belgian budget
I wonder how many political cronies profited from the high intrest rates and now need to be bailed out ( or maybe it is just the king and his family)

Awww I don't like all the shtick this country has been taking - this is one of the most peaceful and democratic countries on earth, a last refuge for Bobby Fischer and one of the most mysterious lands. Some how it just don't seem fair everyone's picking in Iceland right now  :'(

Agreed--I have a lot of friend in Iceland. They're getting unfairly dumped on because someone's investments have gone sour.

Well iceland borrowed and spent like twice their GDP .
Also iceland is holding hostage banksubfilliates in Belgium and Luxemburg refusing to pay out to depositors whilst those same depositors if they
fly to iceland will be paid out ( I guess in fresly printed money )
They are every few days in the news for not honoring their kauphting bank accounts in other countries and since they nationalised the bank ....
