Starting with Zanzibar:

1 Pesa dated 1299 AH or about 1881 AD

Very good Scottishmoney :D :D :D I am always glad to see nice cupper coins in good condicion. Thank you and I anjoy for next. :)
-
An interesting and rarely seen coin. AH1299, am I correct?
-
I really like the style of Zanzibar coins from that period.
Look at how well the script works with the border pattern.
-
A beautiful coin, thanks for sharing
-
I can translate whats written on it if you need :)
-
Aiguptios, that would be very interesting, thanks! :)
-
Sultan Sa' eed Bin Barghash Bin Sultan ALLAH bless
Bin=Son of
ALLAH=God
So the sentance is "Sultan Sa' eed son of Barghash son of Sultan God Bless"
The word ALLAH is written on the top between the two leaves, although it comes at the end of the sentance, because even the name of the Sultan cant be written above the name of God from the islamic point of view.
I would like to point out that the word Sultan at the begining of the sentance is a title while the second one is the name of the Sultan Sa' eed Grandfather.
Hope this helps :)

Because of this forum, I've begun to collect foreign coins. Many times I come across a date of 1232 AH, or 1255 AH, etc.......that's it, nothing more. What yr is a coin with only an 'AH' number? Sometimes there is a double date, i.e., 1235 AH -1816. Well, over time I figured that if one adds 581 yrs to the AH number, you get the true date in our dating system. So, Saor Alba's Zanzibar's 1 pesa coin is dated 1880. I believe I'm correct on the dating of these various coins, but then........
-
Sorry, Goose, but the conversion isn't as simple as that. The Anno Hejira (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anno_Hegirae) (AH) calendar, invented by and used by Muslims throughout the world, uses a "lunar year" that's only 354 days long. To convert AH to AD dates, you have to multiply by 354/365 (or 0.97) and the add 622.
Alternatively, you can use a calendar converter; this one (http://www.rabiah.com/convert/convert.php3) I've found to be most handy, though right now that site seems to be down; google "Islamic calendar converter" for others that are probably just as good. AH 1299 is mostly equivalent to 1882 AD.
Note I said "mostly". Typically, Islamic New Year falls somewhere in the middle of an AD calendar year, so an AH-dated coin could have theoretically been struck in one of two AD years. AH 1299, for instance, began on 21st November 1881, and ended on 11th November 1882. Thus, "mostly 1882".
-
Another one from Zambia...
1983 One Ngwee

and then on to "Y"..

Hmmm, I wonder if I can just quote my birthday in Hejira, and shave a year off, since it was "mostly" a year later? :o

I swear I emailed you back on that one. o.o Yes, I do! What countries were you interested in? Email/PM them to me, I'll see what I have to swap for your desired pricerange.
-
I'll hazard a guess the Tongan pig represents prosperity in their culture.
I think Polynesians regard pigs as a big delicacy. At least Luau feasts in Hawaii always involve a large, slow-cooked pig.
Anyway...enough of the trivia lol.
That's a lively cat on the Somalia Somalo...beautiful condition too! :) I need to get outside my usually range and collect other countries.

I should be good for that once we get to "A" ;D Well, I do have a nice group from Iceland, lol.
I don't think there are any X countries anyway.
Shame, because "X" alone would make a great country name--and an obvious flag motif.

How about making "X" anything you want? :)
Speaking of "X", in the monthly magazine Global Stamp News, there is a writer with a column he calls "Have You Ever Considered Collecting "X", in which the author writes on any foreign country he chooses, simply because there are no countries that begin with the letter "X". I always find his articles extremely informative and interesting because you never know what his topic for the month will be. I am more the numismatist than the philatelist, but by reading his articles I always get a deeper understaning of other foreign countries that I collect on world coins! ;D

Yeah, but what's the point of showing them?
- They are generally not any rarely seen or expensive coins (even I have a Hong Kong dollar),
- They are not fakes so they aren't shown to warn others,
- They are not questionable so they aren't shown to determine their originality,
- They don't have mint errors,
- They aren't shown for the purpose of grading them,
- They aren't shown for the purpose of asking what to do with them,
- They aren't unidentified,
- They are not for sale/trade.
I really see no purpose for these threads..

I think the point here, in my mind, is just to see what other folks have in their world coin collections. I can't sit down at a table somewhere and look at your coins, so I think this posting is a great place to share your finds. I enjoy looking at mint errors, unidentified coins, fakes,etc.. but I also enjoy looking at some nice BU and Proof coins, or any coin for that matter, that may be special to someone else. You don't have to participate if you don't want to, but there may be others like myself who just enjoy seeing what other folks like to collect. :)

Who needs a purpose? We do these things just because they're fun, and they're exciting. Who will be the next person to post a coin? Do I have that coin, or is it one I want to add to my list of coins to acquire?
-They are interesting
-They are beautiful
-They belong to a Knight of the Coin Table
-They can be informative
-They are alphabetical!
What more reason is needed than 'we want to?'
I'd post a new H coin here, except I only have 4 scanned and online at Omnicoin. o.o I should get busy.

Then don't don't view this thread. :o Just ignore it. That is beauty of internet and forums, we can ignore what we not like to see.
Many of us have interesting coins, I have seen many interesting coins in this thread I do not have, and may not have in future either. But I like to see them, like the French Polynesia 1 Franc coin. I have no coins from there, and probably won't. But I liked seeing the coin that goes with the paper money that I do have from French Polynesia.
That is the purpose of this forum, to look at coins, share thoughts about them etc. We even like to trade them too.

Egypt - AE46, Ptolemy IV ca. 221-205 BC. A not so pretty coin with Zeus and an eagle on the reverse. I bought this when I was a kid and I could afford it. Now I would love to find a nicer one, but good luck. This is my largest ancient coin and for quite a few years my oldest one too.

Gotta love the walrus mustache dude ;D
-
Exactly! Criteria for great old coins:
1. Finish. Silver coins look best when slightly darkened, outlining the elements in that dark gray patina.
2. Unreadable Langages. If you can read everything on the coin, it isn't "Darkside" enough. ;D
3. Guy (or girl?) in a crown with a Walrus Mustache!
-
Actually the Eritrean coin is all the better, not because of just two languages, but rather, three.
-
Cool coins Miss Kitty! Thanks for sharing! ;D
-
Regarding the arabic language it says 4/10 Riyal :)

Thanks Amr! That's interesting to know that 1 Lira equated to 1/5 of a Riyal then.
And, to keep us going, Djibouti!

Interesting coin! I like that two-fisted daisy ;D (or whatever it really is).
-
Shake, shake shake, shake Djibouti! Shake Djibouti!
Sorry! :D
-
*Dies laughing.* Someone is in good spirits this afternoon!
The national coat of arms of Djibouti pictured on the coin was introduced after attaining independence on 27 June 1977. It is bordered on the sides with laurel branches. Within this perimeter there is a vertical spear, in front of which is a shield. Underneath the shield, two hands rise away from the spear, which both carry a large knife. These two hands symbolize the main two ethnic groups of the nation: the ethnic group Afar and the ethnic group Issa.

I just love the name of that country, I wasn't implying anything ;D

What grading are coins like these? What do they look like Uncirculated, if you can get them as such? I know they didn't have the minting methods that we have today, but I'm intrigued as to what a newly minted coin would have looked like.

And that's a Coelacanth (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coelacanth) on a Comoros coin! ;D
Yass wrote about the Alexandria Tetradrachm:
"I'm intrigued as to what a newly minted coin would have looked like."
Me too...I'm not very familiar with ancient coins since I only have a few. I'm sure someone knowledgeable like Sap could elaborate. :)
What I do know is this coin was struck on a cast planchet. I find the silvery finish interesting, although the coin has the same density as bronze (8.96).
-
Why, thank you. Apparently I like C coins? Actually, I think I just have a lot of C coins scanned.
And for those of you wanting to know more about the Ancients coins without having to invest a bundle into a library like the one I suspect Sap has at his disposal, try this website: http://www.forumancientcoins.com/board/index.php
They've always been immensely helpful for me. :) And they've got some pretty pictures in their gallery, and quite often the coins are for sale!
-
Like all those C coins Kitty! Espesh the Congo and Cape Verde coins. Didn't you have extras of those Cape Verde coins?
-
Not the Cape Verde ones, no. I had Guinea coins to spare, and now I'm down to two. One for me, and one that I haven't decided what to do with as of yet.

Oh please do PM me if you're interested in a trade, or an outright sale of. ;D

Very nice collection of "C" coins, Miss Kitty! Thanks for sharing! ;)
-
Beautiful coins, Kitty. You never fail to amaze me, with the coins in your collection.
I am partial to coins that are a bit different, so I really like the Cook Island $2 coin.

The China coin has an great sense of history to it...have you identified the period?
They're using an older style of character, which hearkens back to the pictographic roots, I think. ???

Great coins, Steve! ;D Thanks for sharing! ;D

One very fascinating character on the right hand side of the coin, wonder what it is?
-
Triggersmob's Chinese cash coin is from the Song Dynasty, emperor Shen Zong (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emperor_Shenzong_of_Song_China) during his Yuan Feng period (1078-1086 AD). The script used is "seal script", commonly found on coins from the Song Dynasty, a period renown for artistic calligraphy on the coinage.
The four characters are, clockwise from the top, Yuan Feng Tong Bao. "Yuan feng" was the reign-name the Emperor chose to be known by at the time, meaning "first abundance". "Tong bao" is the usual ending on cash coins, meaning "current coin".
One very fascinating character on the right hand side of the coin, wonder what it is?
That's the character "feng", one of many Chinese characters that translate to "abundance". The derivation of this character (http://zhongwen.com/d/194/x215.htm) is a combination of the characters for "plants", "mountain" and "container" - so it literally means "a harvest so plentiful you'd need a box the size of a mountain to hold it all".
-
Sap, thank you for the info.
-
Yes, what a fascinating description. I love stuff like this! :)
Yuan Feng period (1078-1086 AD)
Talk about a timeless tradition of one basic coin style. :o

Thanks to all. really enjoyed looking and drooling over these!

This is a fantastic thread. It so great to see coins from all over the world that you would not normally be able to see. Has anyone got a coin from Xanadu? I think it has Olivia Newton-John on the obverse. :) Ok bad joke, but only "X" country, I could think off.

I tried googling - xanadu coin medal token.
Got nothing that looked 'postable'

I did the same and came up with this:
-
Maybe we should name our Kingdom here, something begining with X.
Then we could put that name on our annual medals and then we could post a pic of that.
-
I have two "X countries" in my collection database, though both are a bit of a stretch as far as being real, genuine, fair dinkum "X countries":
- the Xi Xia Empire, a region in what is now western China which was independent from 1038 to 1227. It may be disqualified for two reasons: some historians (especially mainland Chinese ones) consider it to be "just another Dynasty of China" and not a separate country; it only starts with "X" if you use the Pinyin form of Chinese romanisation; it's "Hsi Hsia" under the old Wade-Giles romanisation; and it's alternate names in English are "Western Xia Empire" or "Tangut Empire".
- a notgeld note from the city of Xanten, Germany. It's disqualified because notgeld-issuing cities weren't normally considered separate countries; I only classify them as such because I don't know what else to do with them in the database.
I'm working on my own "A-Z list", including some more obscure countries that haven't been shown yet; I just need enough spare time to scan and upload pics of them.

;D CANADA, Bank of Upper Canada, and Bank of Montreal Penny and Half Penny tokens. Snagged 'em at a coin show last weekend, dirt cheap! ;D
-
;D
-
:o WOW! I just learned that the 1837 one penny token I posted, also known as a "Habitant Token", has 4 varieties listed in the 2000 Haxby Coins of Canada book, and mine just happens to be the "Banque Du Peuple" (shown on the ribbon) variety, which seems to be the SCARCEST variety of them all, if you look at the prices listed! Pretty good pickens, eh?
-
Very nice 1837! :) I especially like the coloration on yours!

Beautiful coin Elle, and yes, that bird does have a smug look about him! ;D

Do you wonder that there is some closet Republican that designed the Kookaburra coin, ie the bird is on the other side of Queen Elizabeth II?

Knowing your luck in the bargain bin Kurt, I'm guessing it will cost.......$2.50 ;)
