It's unusual for me to be posting US coins, as I don't collect them generally. However, I just dug up my PiggyBank from the move and had to paw through it's contents. :D It's only got about ten coins, but they're all older US coins that I've had for years. I am thinking they probably came from my Great Grandmother, but it's been so long that I don't really remember anymore.
Not exactly AU condition, but the 1898 coin has a very gentle rainbow tone to the fields that I really love. Either way, both coins are nice enough that I think they deserve to be put in something nicer than a ceramic piggybank. ;)

Gotta love those family coins, I have a couple of coin purses full of pre-1918 coins that were my Great great Grandfather's coins. Nothing really rare, lots of IHC's, but also several SL dimes, the earliest is dated 1843. He died in 1918 during the influenza outbreak, and they kept his coin purses intact. It is interesting to see that 75 year old coins were still circulating even in 1918.

It's interesting indeed, but if you stop and think logically; they didn't have the transportation available that we have now, nor did they have the capability of minting the masses of coins we have today, there weren't hungry numismatists on every street corner, and also those little coins were worth one helluva lot more. People held on to them. Banks weren't always reliable, so many people stuffed coins in piggy banks, kitchen canisters, beneath floorboards or in the wallspaces, in the basement, between pages of books. (I've got a cool Republic of Texas five dollar note that we found in a book.)
I can full well believe that coins circulated for a good deal longer than they do today.

It is such a lovely toned coin that I "squared" it . I could do nothing about the top part being out of focus .

Very Nice coins, indeed.
1898 is of Philadelphia Mint and I have both of them.
My Barber Halves were kept in Paper Envelopes and have similar rainbow toning. Now I keep them, in Dansco Albums.
Please digout the Piggy Bank and find other dates and mint marks. Wish you a 1892-Micro O Mint Mark

Beautiful coins. I yet didn´t see many silver coins but I think that those coins are the best coins on the world. Thanks for nice photos. :)
