Title: Rare coin world catalogue
Post by: EgCollector on May 01, 2008, 09:59:15 AM
Is there a catalogue for rare and scarce world coins that you recommend?

I mean a catologe for rare world gold, silver, copper ....etc coins in one book.

Thanks  :D

A book that only lists the rare coins, but not the common ones? Can't say I've heard of such a thing.

There is a catalogue that only lists the "Crowns" (http://www.amazon.com/Standard-Catalog-World-Crowns-Talers/dp/0873412117/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1209688661&sr=1-2) - also published by Krause. And there's Friedberg's catalogue of Gold Coins (http://www.amazon.com/Gold-Coins-World-Illustrated-Valuations/dp/0871843064/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1209688935&sr=1-1). But I don't think either of those are what you're after.

Well, here's a chance to get the Knights of the Coin Table on the radar!

Maybe our Rare Coin Gurus could get together and make a manuscript of our ... say 100 favourite rare coins?  Publish it.. make money!

Thanks Sap, I was just wondering if such a book exists. It would have saved me a lot of money, because now i will have to buy many books to collect the data i am looking for.  :(

This is an excellent idea ElleKitty, lets start a KOTCT PROJECT for World Rare Coins. Every member could work on his/her country or a country of his/her choice. Regading myself, i will be very interested to help regarding Egyptian coins.  ;D

Part of the difficulty is in defining "rare". For some people, "rare" is any coin you have to pay more than $10 for.

There are some books out there along the lines of what's been suggested; books like Milestone Coins (http://www.amazon.com/Milestone-Coins-Pageant-Significant-Popular/dp/0794823610/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1209777653&sr=1-1) that list the 100 favourite coins of the author or authors; some are "rare", some not. All are popular - some even more so, now that book is out. I sure haven't seen a silphium coin of Kyrene available for decent money since they were listed in that book. :(

Some people on ebay call a belgian carolus rare
There were 1 500 000 made around 1987 but you do not see them often

My personal definiton of rare is 2000 coins max
